Ovidius 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Author: Karin Mabry
Genre: Fantasy

Blurb
'Ovidius' follows the lives of members of the Ovidius community, a neighborhood surrounding The Ovidius Zoo, home of Worthington the Tiger. The animals of Ovidius communicate with each other using mental telepathy, unbeknownst to humans. Some, like Godiva the Cat and Sam the Bird, tweak the agreed-upon system to fit their agendas, Godiva, to write poetry, Sam, to wreak havoc. Others, like Philodendrum the Bullfrog and Xavier the human, friend of Godiva, are just trying to figure out who they really are. Written in the fix-up style, ‘Ovidius’ is a beautiful reflection on animals, spirituality and being wild and free.

Ornery Owl's Mini Review
The following is a duplicate of my review for this book on Amazon.

If you appreciated George Orwell's "Animal Farm," you will enjoy Ovidius, a series of interconnected fantasy stories about animals who can communicate telepathically. Filled with dark mirroring of various human foibles, this book is definitely not for children. Those who dare venture into Ovidius will be forever changed and may discover something about themselves in the process.

There is an animal here for everyone! You may relate to the anger felt by Worthington the Tiger. Perhaps you are a spiritual seeker like Philodendrum the Bullfrog. Maybe you have a poetic soul like Godiva the Cat. Maybe you're just a muddled-up human such as Xavier, who likes animals better than people. And don't we all know someone like Sam the Bird, a jerk who is full of himself and enjoys messing up everyone else's life?

If you enjoy speculative stories that make you think, Ovidius is the right book for you.

In prudish, patriarchal Victorian England, nineteen-year-old prodigy Gillian Smith finds a secret society dedicated to the erotic arts. She’ll need both her intellect and her physical charms to earn the permanent position she craves.

Inspired by a salacious catalogue found in her deceased uncle’s library, she applies for an apprenticeship with the Toymakers Guild. The Guild fabricates bespoke sexual artifacts for the private pleasure of select clients – an occupation for which Gillian, with her technical abilities and her lascivious temperament, is eminently suited.

The other apprentices, initially skeptical about a female engineer, become enthusiastic supporters once they’ve tested her erotic aptitude. The voluptuous Governing Director, and the dashing French journeyman likewise help expand her carnal repertoire. The final decision, however, rests with the reclusive Master Toymaker, who has been missing for nearly two years.

When an unscrupulous nobleman sets up a competing enterprise, he threatens not only the livelihood of the Guild’s members but their lives as well. Gillian hatches an audacious plan to entrap the villain, save the Guild, and leave the absent Master no choice but to grant her heart’s desire.

If you like steam punk erotica with a kinky feminist bent, you'll love The Pornographer's Apprentice.

Ornery Owl's Mini Review
(The following is a duplicate of my review of this book on Amazon)
I received an advance review copy of this book. I was immediately drawn into the story. Revena is a tough young woman living in difficult times. Reviled for her appearance, her innate magical abilities, and for being female, she must keep her wits about her if she is to survive an arranged marriage to a brutal Baron.

This is indeed not a pretty love story. It is intended for adult audiences only. There are scenes of violence including sexual assault that some readers may find upsetting. However, these situations are depicted in a forthright and realistic manner rather than a lurid or gratuitous fashion. Being misused by men was a reality for women living in the Dark Ages.

Revena is the kind of determined, gritty heroine often missing from fantasy fiction. I highly recommend this powerful story.
