Guest Post with Author Jana Richards

Thank you for hosting me and letting me tell you about my Masonville series. STRONG ENOUGH, the fourth and final book in the series will release on June 22, 2022, so I’m taking this opportunity to talk about the other books in the series as well.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted to write about overcoming problems and deep traumas, and I wanted to show how love might help heal those wounds—love from a romantic partner, of course, but also love from community, family, friends and even pets. And especially learning to love yourself. The characters in this series often come from a place of deep shame, and part of their healing is coming to believe that they are good, decent people who are worth loving.

In CHILD OF MINE, book one of the Masonville series, Lauren’s shame is that she becomes pregnant on the day of her husband Billy’s funeral when she sleeps with Billy’s older brother, Cole. Cole’s been her friend since they were teenagers, and they connected because of shared anguish and anger. But now that she’s pregnant, everyone in her small town assumes the baby is Billy’s. How can Lauren overcome her shame and tell the truth?

Lauren didn't intend to sleep with her brother-in-law Cole on the day of her husband's funeral. But now that she is pregnant, she's not sorry. Cole's given her a baby, a long-wished-for miracle. He's been her friend forever, though she never told him or anyone else how unhappy her marriage to his cheating brother was. And she's afraid to tell the small town that considered her husband a hero that the baby isn't his.

Cole's been in love with Lauren since he was sixteen. It kills him that everyone believes the baby is his dead brother's. All he wants is to claim the baby, and Lauren, as his own. Though she marries him, will Lauren's heart ever be his?

Lauren must tell the truth or risk losing Cole. Is her newly-discovered love for him greater than her fear of scandal in her hometown?

Here are Five Things You Need to Know About CHILD OF MINE:

1.    Cole and Lauren have known each other since they were teenagers when Cole tutored Lauren in chemistry. They stayed friends through the years, even after Lauren married Cole’s younger brother, Billy. And even though Cole has been in love with her all these years.

2.    Billy dies in a car accident, and Lauren comes back home to North Dakota to bury him. She’s angry and grief-stricken and filled with guilt. She had a terrible fight with her cheating husband before he died. Did their fight cause him to lose his concentration on that Georgia Interstate?

3.    Cole’s a veterinarian and Lauren is a bookkeeper. Cole helps Lauren get a job at his clinic as the receptionist/bookkeeper.

4.     Mia, a former girlfriend of Billy’s, also works at the veterinary clinic and is determined to cause trouble for Lauren.

5.    CHILD OF MINE is set in North Dakota. Though I live directly north of North Dakota on the other side of the 49th parallel, both areas are part of the Great Plains of North America. I’m a true lover of the prairie landscape. To me, the endless skies and vast vistas are awe inspiring. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s boring!

Excerpt:

Cole wrapped her in his arms. He held her securely, whispering reassurances. “It’s all right, Lauren. Don’t cry. It’s going to be okay, sweetheart.”

She clung to him, her face buried against his neck. How wonderful to be held, to be touched. It had been so long—

What was she doing? This was Cole, her friend. She pulled away from him. “I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have anything to apologize for.”

She turned away and tried to wipe the tears from her face. After she got her tears under control, she made herself smile at him. “Do you remember the homecoming dance? The time I tripped in my new high heels and sprained my ankle?”

“Of course I do. You couldn’t walk, so I carried you from the school gym to Billy’s car, and he drove you home. I remember you were a lot heavier than you looked.”

She swatted his shoulder, hiccupping laughter mixing with her tears. “Very funny. I was trying to make a point.”

He wiped the tears from her cheek with the pad of his thumb, his dark eyes full of tenderness. “So what was your point?”

“You’re a good friend. You’ve always been there every time I’ve needed you, and here you are again. Thank you.”

He stared into her eyes, but said nothing. She couldn’t look away. He continued to stroke her cheek with his thumb, the tiny caress acting like a balm to her battered heart. She placed her hand on his cheek.

 “Cole.”

They reached for each other in mutual need. He pulled her against his chest, his mouth descending on hers in a hungry, urgent kiss. She sighed against his mouth, and he brought her closer. He wants me. It had been so long since someone had wanted her. Only her.

Release Date: November 2nd, 2021

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Length: 38k WC/202 pages

Heat Rating: 4 flames

Blurb

Lies. Betrayal. A blown undercover mission.

After ten years away, DEA agent Jarrett Brandt heads home to pay his respects to his deceased brother and hide out from the cartel kingpin who wants him dead. Widowed mom Marissa Reinn never had much luck with the Brandt boys. First Jarrett broke her heart, then she lost his brother—her husband—to a bullet. Vowing to uncover Jarrett’s secrets, she succumbs to the passion still burning between them instead.

When a team of assassins find him, Jarrett and Marissa will have to work together to survive and protect her son. How will they seize their second chance at love with their lives on the line?

Rekindling the flames of love has never burned so hot.

Excerpt

“You can trust me, Jarrett. I won’t tell your parents anything you don’t want me to.” She sighed and stood as well. “You used to tell me everything. We never kept secrets.”

Jarrett paced between the coffee table and fireplace. “My parents’ opinion doesn’t matter. Dad would still throw up my juvie record or the fact that I’m not a cop, even if I was a model citizen. I’m not that lost, angry kid anymore. I know who I am now, and it’s not someone you’d want to know.”

“I disagree.”

“God, you don’t understand. Marissa, I’ve missed you so damn much. I’ve laid awake so many nights wondering what my life would’ve been like if I’d stayed here.” When he made love to other women, he imagined Marissa beneath him or above him, panting his name. When the nightmares of blood and gore faded, he dreamed of her. Those bittersweet memories and what if scenarios were almost worse than the nightmares. “I’ve done things I’m not proud of.”

“I hated you after you left, but I’ve gotten over it. Everyone feels regret and guilt over something. It’s all about being human.” She dashed away her tears. “I told you mine last night. Will you please show me the same courtesy?”

“I can’t.”

“At least tell me what you did last Christmas. Jason made it crystal clear that he didn’t want you alone. He wants you to have a tree.” She pointed at the Douglas fir. “Well, there you go. What did you do last year?”

Jarrett licked his dry lips, heat swelling in his cheeks.

He’d joined the Consuelo gang last December and spent the holiday in a slummy apartment with five thugs who sold cocaine on the streets of Albuquerque. Living around his drug of choice had nearly destroyed him.

“What about your last birthday?” Marissa blocked his path and braced her hands on her hips. “Did you have cake or go out with a bunch of buddies and get drunk? Did something horrible happen? Why won’t you tell me anything?”

He shoved a hand through his hair. “Damn it, Marissa. Yeah, I got drunk. A few of us went to a strip club where I fucked two dancers in a backroom. Is that what you wanted to hear?”

Her eyes widened as she stepped back.

Way to go, you fucking idiot. He brushed his shaky hands on his button-down shirt to steady them. “Marissa—”

She strode past him with a high head and left the room.

Her cold shoulder skewered him, but he didn’t deserve better.

Moon Lighting

by C.A. Gray

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy

Adrenaline is the cure for her body, mind, and soul.

If she ignores the call of her ancestors, death is sure to follow. If she puts aside the desires of her heart, it’s guaranteed to break.

A mild-mannered teacher by day.

A rogue vigilante by night.

A cop with an agenda.

Two hearts intertwined by fate.

This magic-wielding hybrid isn’t holding back when it comes to justice or love, but can she have both?

I was diagnosed with clinical depression after the loss of my mother, father and husband within three years of each other; all to cancer. 24/7 in-home care, coupled with the loss I felt, left its mark on my psyche.

Depression takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real time.

To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn't open mail, talk on the phone, or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall. There didn't need to be a reason or trigger.

People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world into which other people with similar problems could escape. I wanted to share the one place that had helped me for many years.

I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don't ever let anyone tell you different.

I read books as well as write them and have visited the worlds many different authors have created. Those worlds not only make me feel better, but give me the strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes—I want them to know they are making a difference.

Fast forward to today...

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I see music in color. The notes have motion and dimension. Listening to music is a whole experience for me and brings me a lot of joy. Some of my favorite singers/bands are Elton John, Rush, CCR, Grateful Dead, Ghost, Ella Fitzgerald, and Greta Van Fleet.

What are some of your pet peeves?

Aside from the obvious social injustices of the world, there are a few things I can’t stand. I hate traffic. I don’t mind a long drive, but sitting in a line of cars, not moving, not knowing when the traffic jam will ease, always drives me batty. To me, it’s time spent on a useless, pointless task and that time can never be recovered. Same reason I hate treadmills. It’s just standing in the same place, going nowhere.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born and raised in Virginia near Richmond. I currently live about two hours away from the ocean and about three hours from the mountains. I found the perfect middle spot. Virginia has a lot of beautiful parks and hiking trails. Being outside helps me feel connected to the most essential things, the things that really matter. During winter though, I usually stay inside and hide under a bunch of blankets.

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

I would gather up all my loved ones and have a day to snorkel through some caves and swim in the ocean. Once the evening hit, we’d all sit around a bonfire, listen to some good music, and drink margaritas. Throughout my last day, I would make sure everyone knew they were loved and how important they were to me.

What kind of world ruler would you be?

I would try to teach people to be kinder and help each other instead of only helping themselves. But first, I would set up a system that allows for that possibility. I would make education and environmental preservation huge priorities. Listening to problems and looking for the reason why things happen so people could get the help they needed would be my goal.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

Sometimes I watch movies or TV shows that I’ve already seen a million times like Clueless or iZombie and veg on the sofa. Going for a scenic walk, especially with my dog, or doing a workout usually helps clear my head. Herbal refreshments help too.

How do you find time to write as a parent?

I have to be creative about it. I write a bit when they’re in school and I write scenes in my head sometimes while I’m in the shower, on the exercise bike, even walking through the grocery store. I get interrupted a million times in the evenings when there are other people in the house. I had to learn to work with a constantly fractured focus. I also stay up really late into the night hoping to outlast everyone and get some peace and quiet.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I have always loved writing. My English class assignments were always fun and challenging. I wrote poetry and essays just because I enjoyed doing so. I never thought of myself as a writer until I seriously thought about trying to write a novel and have it published. But really, I was a writer all along.

Which of your novels can you imagine being made into a movie?

Probably Tiger’s Last Chance (Stranger Creatures book 3) or Bear’s Dream (Haven Forest Resort book 1). Both stories have a lot of suspense and adventure elements. Plus, I think the waterfalls, streams, and trees in the resort of Bear’s Dream would look wild and beautiful in a movie.

What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

I’ve never been on any official literary retreat. I would love to take a week (or several weeks) out of my ordinary life and go to a seminar and talk with other writers, get ideas, and then sit out on the beach for a few days with my pen and composition notebook and just write. Getting my ideas out of my head onto paper without the distractions of everyday life would be an amazing experience. I would have to return to daily life sooner or later, but that’s alright. The struggles that writers see and live through are part of what gives us fuel to write.

Before I had the wild idea to write a book, I worked in a few different fields. I was in sales for a while, and after I finished college, I worked as a case manager. When my children were little, I was a personal trainer and running coach. During the evenings, when I was supposed to be studying for another fitness training certification, I started writing a story. Finally, I gave in and acknowledged that writing is what I’m meant to do. I love creating imperfect but determined characters who find the courage to love and the strength to survive in a world where there are no guarantees. My stories include a fair amount of sarcasm, suspense, steam, and violence. When I’m not writing, I enjoy spending time outside and finding ways to avoid cooking. I live in beautiful Virginia with my husband, two daughters, and a sweet, hairy monster of a dog.

The beam from my flashlight cascaded across the walls as I moved along. I saw obvious signs of painting or photos having once resided on their surfaces—squares not quite as discolored as the surrounding water-stained wallpaper—but whatever treasures once hung within the mansion were now gone.

As I pulled open a cabinet that appeared to be held together by cobwebs as much as the original nails and screws that once bound it, I heard a noise from above.

I can’t really describe the sound other than to say it made me think of a huge object being moved across the floor by many feet. Craning my neck, I aimed my flashlight straight up just in time to breathe in a cough-inducing lungful of drifting dust from the ceiling above. The noise continued for several seconds before silencing.

“Looks like somebody’s home after all.” I was still hopeful we could avoid detection, but unless we came up with the object of our search soon, we would have to venture upstairs and would surely come into contact with the perpetrators of the sound.

I picked my way through two more rooms. The first, was a sitting room with hundreds of scattered books, most about farming. The second was an oddly shaped room that held nothing but empty cans of food—everything from pork and beans to dog food. I finally worked my way deep enough into the manor to reach the front foyer. Slinging my flashlight around the grand space, I managed to catch a glimpse of the majesty the house must have once commanded. Again, I thought of the elite, the aristocrats, that undoubtedly called the place home and wondered what had happened to them. Bits of antique furniture, all wilting and moth-eaten, cluttered the corners. Over my head was a chandelier comprised of hundreds of dangling crystals; they refracted my beam into countless spots of light, which danced through the drab interior. A wide, grand staircase rose up at the far end of the foyer, opposite the front doors, and proceeded to the second floor. I pursed my lips at this as somebody had meticulously laid sheets of plywood over the steps, transforming them into one long, rough rampway.

“Owen?” Lester’s voice caused me to jump.

“Fuck!” I spun, preparing to give the man shit for sneaking up on me but came up short.

He stumbled from a darkened doorway on the opposite side of the foyer with something square tucked under his arm. He had turned off his flashlight—or lost it, I never found out—before entering the cavernous room. When I aimed my own beam at him like a spotlight, he only stared back with a blank expression.

“Lester!” I whispered as loud as I dared. “Did you find it?”

He slowly looked down at the object in his possession as if having seen it for the first time and gave me a dimwitted nod. What the hell was wrong with him?

Above us, the sound I heard from earlier returned. This time it was faster, louder, and accompanied by additional noise. A chorus of chattering voices.

I exchanged looks with Lester, then grabbed him by the collar of his coat and began yanking him toward the front doors. “Let’s go!” The man was almost deadweight in my grasp. His feet dragged along like a person learning to walk for the first time.

Once outside in the frigid, night air, he seemed to perk up though and even managed to pull himself free and continue to my car under his own steam.

“That place…” he mumbled.

“Yeah, fucking weird. But you got it, right?”

“Got to be. It’s the only painting I saw. It was hung on the wall in a room full of—fuck, I don’t know—farm stuff?”

The drive back to the city was a quiet one. That suited me just fine as I’ve never been a fan of conversing with others. I used the time to try and come up with plausible explanations for the odd sounds I had heard in the mansion.

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

My name is Christian Laforet, but I write under the name C.M. Forest. I have nothing against my own name, it is a perfectly fine name, as far as names are concerned. But there is just an air of mystery to C.M. Forest that I enjoy. Also, it is better than the name I wish I had as a kid: Hell-Bat Jones!

Anywho, I began my writing career with short stories. I thought they were the best things ever written. I was so sure of the platinum-level talent on display, that I submitted a few for publication. A very kind editor reached out and, very professionally, told me that I needed a lot of work.

With tail tucked firmly between legs, I went back to the drawing board and took things a bit slower this time. I joined a local writing group (they were far less civil in their critiques than that kindly editor) and started improving. Side note, if you are a rookie writer, join a writing group. It will help immensely!

After getting my butt kicked by the group for a couple years, I started taking the whole thing seriously. My first book, a short story collection called The Space Between Houses was a small, but significant triumph for me.

Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!

Interesting? Probably. Unfortunate? Definitely. When I was 19 years old, I was run over by a dump truck. True story! I was walking on the sidewalk, coming up to an intersection, and an actual dump truck jumped the curb behind me, hit me, and ran over my leg.

Thankfully, and as is evidenced by this very interview, I survived the ordeal. In fact, all things considered, I came out of the whole thing in surprisingly good condition. Besides a bad knee and some scars on my right leg, I’m no worse for wear.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born and grew up in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It’s very close to being the most southern point of the country, and, fun fact, there are 27 US states that are, at least partially, further North than Windsor.

How to find time to write as a parent?

I wouldn’t recommend it—having kids that is! I’m joking… But yeah, it’s tough as hell to do both. Especially if your kids are little (mine are 8 and 11). Recently, I’ve found a good routine though. I drop my kids off at school then hit the local library to get my words in for the day. I could work at home, but there are just so many distractions there (I’m looking at you, PlayStation!).

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

After getting raked across the coals by the local writing group, but before my short story collection came out, I started posting shorts on a blog I had at the time. The blog, which was a testing ground of sorts for my work, had almost no views or followers. To be fair, I hardly promoted it, as it really was just a place to dump stories. But then one day, while at the day job, a co-worker came up to me and told me she really enjoyed the newest story. Now, I’m not the best-looking chap, so I knew she wasn’t flirting with me, and we hadn’t talked much before that, so there was no reason to say such a thing just to be nice. No, she actually read the stories there, and really, truly dug them. That was the day I felt like a writer for the first time.

Do you have a favorite movie?

So many! But if I had to choose one, I would say either the Fifth Element or The Crow. For horror movies, I gotta represent my dude in the hockey mask and say Friday the 13th Part 4!

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?

I actually think We All Fall Before the Harvest would make a great movie. Novellas translate well to film because of their length and limited cast. Even if I hadn’t written the book, I would watch the hell out of that movie!

What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

This one depresses me, because the answer is: not nearly enough. I have done a few writers retreats, but they’ve been fairly local to where I live. I would love—LOVE!—to take a cross-country road trip though. Just me, my computer, and a whole lot of time. That would be amazing. Staying in small towns, meeting new people. It’s on the bucket list, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

C.M. Forest, also known as Christian Laforet, is the author of the novel Infested, as well as the novella We All Fall Before the Harvest. A self-proclaimed horror movie expert, he spent an embarrassing amount of his youth watching scary movies. When not writing, he lives in Ontario, Canada with his wife, kids, three cats and a pandemic dog named Sully who has an ongoing love affair with a blanket.
