“Can we walk a little?” Claire grabbed his hand as if it was the most natural thing to do.

They carried their shoes and strolled across the wet, firm sand. Only the sounds of gulls calling and the light slapping of the waves filled their ears.

Strangely, her fingers warmed his. Did his warm hers? Why did he even wonder? He’d only shared sunsets with one other woman.

They must’ve walked a half-mile or so before Claire halted and turned to him with cloudy eyes. “Maybe we’d better go back,” she whispered. “Thanks for walking with me. After so many hours in meetings, this has been very calming and refreshing.”

She hesitated. “Agnes was right. One of your qualities she praised over and over was that you are a gentleman—a gentle man. I haven’t experienced many gentle men.”
