Back to the old homestead. Lulu snorted and pulled onto the dirt road leading to the witch enclave. She wasn’t a witch herself. Hell, she wasn’t even sure what she was -- the daughter of a witch and an elf. Did that make her a Wilf? An Elch? She had magic, but she wasn’t good with spells. She couldn’t bake for shit and refused to live in a tree.

She drove the mucky path passing for a street to the house she’d grown up in. When she’d left for college, she’d been so wide-eyed and excited. So ready to embrace the world.

Then Tom happened. He’d consumed her life. He made her feel things. Showed her there was more to life, but most of it wasn’t good. He needed control.

Of course, he did.

Being a sorcerer, he lived for control.

Every time she looked back on her last few years, she winced. She’d been so naive. She’d let him do all the things he’d done because she thought she loved him.

He’d never loved her.

But that didn’t matter now. She’d broken free from his control, and he’d moved on to his next victim.

She stopped in her parents’ driveway, but her thoughts clogged her mind. She’d considered his next girlfriend a victim. God. What a piece of work Tom was!

That didn’t matter. She’d come home. She’d gone back to what she knew so she could heal her heart.

She left the car and strode over to the barn. Poofs of colored smoke shot from the chimney. Her mother must be creating.

She spied the plants in the field. Her father had finally got the crops out on time. Good for him. A smile pulled at her lips. At least someone had their life going in the right direction.

She’d figure hers out soon enough.

She diverted from the barn and made her way over to the field. She breathed in the clean scent of the crops. Eerie was a hot mess at times, but it was also the place for paranormals to be themselves. It was a safe place.

She’d thought she needed a place to run away to, but not when home called. It wasn’t like she had a lost love back home. She’d never had a boyfriend when she’d been in Eerie. She hadn’t been enough of a paranormal -- not looking like an elf or witch. She’d been too normal and teased for her appearance. Being different hadn’t bothered her, though. She shook her head. She’d pulled herself up and grown. She wasn’t the same girl who’d left town.

“You made it.” Daff, her father, bounded up to her. “Got a lot to move in?”

“I’m not moving in, Daddy.” She’d found an apartment on March Avenue, above a bakery. Sue her for liking the smells.

“I didn’t think you would be, but I cleaned up the second floor just in case.” He wiped his hands on a towel hanging from his pocket. “What are you planning to do?”

“I’m living in the Towers. Fourth floor. I’ll get the keys this evening. It’s furnished so I don’t have to move anything but my clothes.” She’d worked out a deal with Marina, her second cousin, to get the last furnished unit.

“Good. I’m glad.” Her father hesitated. “Are you having a roommate?”

“No.”

“Are you sure? A witch alone?” Her father shook his head. “We have room.”

“You do, but I need to do this on my own.” She hugged him. “But I appreciate the concern. I’m only a call away.”

“I know,” her father said. “Got a job yet?”

“At Linc’s.” She wasn’t sure working at a bar was smart, but it was a job.

“The bar?”

“In the restaurant. I head there next.” She stepped back. “Just wanted to see you and Mom. I can use all the anchors I can get.” She needed them.

“You’re always welcome here.”

“I know. Is Mom around?” She hadn’t seen her and her mother tended to be the center of attention.

“She’s mixing spells with Grinella.”

She should’ve guessed. “She spends a lot of time there with her.”

“She does.”

Sadness tinged his voice and she hesitated. “To the exclusion of you?”

“A bit.”

“Daddy.” She wasn’t sure what to do to help him.

“She needs to find herself, so I’m letting her.”

“But you’re unhappy.” She would be, too.

“I am, but I’ll be here for her.”

“What do you want? For you? Not for Mom?”

He stared at her. “I never thought about it.”

“I know.” She sat beside him on the fence. “What do you want?”

“To farm. To have my animals and work the land. To feel the earth in my hands. To be loved,” he said. “All those things.”

“Then that’s what you should do. All of those things. Have you told Mom you don’t feel loved?”

“She’s never home and when she is, she’s drifting. It’s like I can’t reach her.”

“You need to try and tell her.” She hugged him. “I didn’t tell Reuben how I felt and it made life miserable. It would’ve changed so much and might have kept me from dating Tom.” Might have made her life better.

“I will.”

“You need to.” She sighed. “I’ll check on you, but I need to get to work.”

“Go ahead. I’ll be okay.” He nodded. “It’ll always be okay.”

“You’re sure?”

“I am.” He offered a sad smile. “Go. Get your life going.”

“I will.” She hesitated before heading to her car. She wanted to be there for her dad. To help him have the best. For both him and her mother. She loved them and they did love each other, but they weren’t good at communicating. Right now, they seemed pulled apart. Sort of like her situation with Reuben. He’d felt abandoned and used that feeling to walk away. He claimed he had to find his happiness. He hadn’t cared that she was confused by her own feelings and overwhelmed. He didn’t care that she wasn’t sure how to deal with stress, but he wanted what he wanted when he wanted it, and if someone argued, they were wrong. Not him.

She’d been wrong often. But she hadn’t told him how she’d felt.

She slid behind the wheel, then left the farm. Dust swirled in her wake. Gravel crunched under her tires. A sense of freedom washed over her. She was her own woman. No Tom or Reuben to stand in her way. A single lady. And it was time she found her own happy.

Not at a bar, but that was a job. She drove across Eerie, passing the woods, the lake with light sparkling on the water and so peaceful. She’d never been much of a nature lover, but she appreciated the solitude and ability to get lost in the woods to center herself.

She continued to the east end of town. Most residents hated the east end because of the rough crowd that tended to frequent the area. The bars and dance halls were there. So was the bail bondsman’s office.

She parked in the lot behind the bar in the staff area. The hotel stood behind the bar and seemed to groan in the late afternoon sun. She didn’t know many of the vehicles, but she hadn’t worked there yet. She hadn’t met the gang. Being hired the day before made knowing people difficult. She left her car and locked it, then ventured into the building.

“Hi.” A blond man with a dirty T-shirt stood by the kitchen sink. “First day?”

“It is.” She recognized the man. The satyr. She thought his name was Stav. Or something like that. “You’re here today?” She’d been warned against him.

“Always.” He grinned and dried his hands. “My brother owns the bar. I’m sure Lance hired you.”

“He did.” The easy conversation reassured her. “He mentioned his baby brother.”

“Good or bad?” A wicked glimmer filled his eyes.

“A little bit of both.”

Out of the Way Things Review #rabtbooktours

Fantasy / Mythology / Folklore

Date Published: September 13, 2023

For as long as Win can remember, she has seen things that no one else can see, horrific hallucinations that feel nearly real. After a decades-long parade of visions, Win rarely questions her condition. When the hallucinations arrive, she simply braces herself and waits for them to pass. Every other aspect of Win’s life is perfectly ordinary and vaguely disappointing: a mind-numbing job, mounting debt, and a lackluster social life.

It all changes for Win in a moment, when a tragic vision brings her face to face with a stranger who claims Win is more than an ordinary woman, mired in the ordinary world. Her visions, more than terrifying fantasies, reveal truths that only she can see, truths that others would do anything to control. Win’s arcane ability endangers her as much as it empowers her, and she finds herself hunted by a mysterious force. Her only option is to leave the life she knows and seek out who she is.

With more questions than answers, Win enters a world where fairy tales and folklore hide in the lives of everyday people. She must learn to live in the space between otherworldly dangers and mundane reality. Win must decide which monsters can be trusted, how she will pay her bills, and what she must learn about herself to combat an unseen enemy, an enemy whose ambition threatens the very fabric of reality.

Irreverent and comically dark, Out of the Way Things offers a fantastic world, filled with mythic beings concealed in the shadows of the ordinary. Kendall McNutt brings readers into a hyper realistic fantasy that asks us to consider the possibility that all stories are true and that nothing is impossible.

Ornery Owl's Review

Rating: Four out of Five Stars

Win has never really fit in with the world. Even her own family prefers to avoid her. She is prone to horrifying visions. These visions crop up during an important job interview. Knowing she won't get the job, Win returns to her current profession cleaning houses.

When Win goes to clean an old property, she meets a friendly handyman named Twain. During the course of the afternoon, things go badly awry. Twain ends up dead in the basement of the house, and now Win is being stalked. After a close call at her apartment, she is rescued by a woman named Sophia. Sophia is more than she initially appears to be and she reveals that Win is as well.

The story is compelling and I liked Win from the start. As an oddball myself, I'm drawn to characters who don't fit in. I am glad that the writer made Win imperfect and I like the fact that Win respects herself even if she doesn't always like herself. She has a strong sense of self-preservation.

I also like the fact that the story focused on Win and her personal development rather than deviating into a romantic arc where Win finds her Prince Charming and spends the entire story obsessing over him. There are enough of those stories out there. It was nice to read a book that focused on the female characters for a change. I love the fact that the story focuses on who Win is rather than on what she looks like.

There were some stylistic choices such as starting sentences with "and" and "but" which didn't work for me. Also, the scene where the witch sacrifices the guinea pig was harrowing to read. I realize the witch was not a nice person (or even a person at all), but I still disliked the scene.

Readers who enjoy dark urban fantasy will probably enjoy this book. The story's finale isn't exactly a cliffhanger but it is open-ended, suggesting the possibility of forthcoming books in the series. Readers who prefer a precise ending should be aware of this.

Blurb

When a woman atoning for past sins heals the human avatar of an ancient god, she’s drawn into a perilous dance of destiny and desire.

From the first, Dr. Elena Navarro senses that the wounded man she discovers outside the gate of her rural clinic is not an ordinary mortal. With his chest ripped open, Jorge Pélikal still demonstrates unnatural strength and power. Elena is irresistibly attracted to Jorge, although he warns her their coupling could open the gates of chaos and cost her life. Despite his dire predictions, they fall in love. Gradually Elena comes to understand that Jorge is a supernatural player in a cosmic drama that will determine the fate of the earth and of mankind—and that even if he triumphs in his apocalyptic struggle with his nemesis, she may lose him forever.

Note: Serpent’s Kiss was previously published by Totally Entwined. This new edition has been re-edited, revised and expanded.

Reader Advisory: This book may not be appropriate for individuals with a fear of snakes.

Excerpt

“Doctora!” The voice rose out of the darkness—the voice of the man who had vanished that morning from a sealed room, leaving no trace but a brilliant, multi-colored feather. As if conjured by her thoughts, Jorge Pélikal emerged from the shadows. He waited at the foot of the steps, mutely requesting her permission to ascend.

He looked far healthier than when she had seen him last. His step was firm and strong, with no indication that he was in pain. His hair cascaded over his shoulders, gleaming in the light of the rising moon. She could not see his face—he was still too distant—but she could smell him. Vanilla and wood-smoke—the same scents that were evoked by the mysterious token she had found under the bed.

He was dressed in rough-woven trousers and a peasant’s cotton tunic, all in white. His skin, in contrast, was a deep cocoa-brown.

Elena’s heart rose into her throat. He was beautiful. He was dangerous—she sensed this—not because of what he might do, but because of who he was. But who exactly was he?

“Jorge! Why did you run away?” She gestured for him to join her on the porch. In an instant, he stood in front of her, a half-smile on his full lips.

He grasped her hands. His skin was cool now, and moist like the jungle night. His fever is gone, she thought gratefully. Joy bubbled up in her chest. She almost laughed. She had thought that she would never see him again.

“I had no choice. I was in grave danger. And by remaining in your clinic, I was placing you in danger.”

“Moving when your chest has been ripped open and is held together by nothing more than a few feeble stitches wasn’t exactly the safest thing to do,” she scolded. “But I’m happy to see that you’re so much better.”

“Much better, thanks to you…Elena.” He squeezed her hands. Desire raced through her, sharp, irrational, irresistible. “I’m sorry that I had to return and place you at risk once again. But I left something behind. Something important.”

“I know. I have it, hidden safely away.”

He searched her face, apparently trying to determine how much she knew about the feather. “Give it to me, then, and I’ll leave you in peace.”

“No.”

“What?”

“No—I don’t want you to go. I’ll give you the feather, but only if you promise to spend the night with me.” Listening to herself, Elena was appalled. What was she saying?

She had not planned this. She was keeping the feather for him and had honestly intended to return it. But now she wanted him, with a single-mindedness that drove out all reason. She would do anything to satisfy this uncharacteristic craving. She could not let him escape again.

He cupped her cheek in one of his strong brown hands. Elena nearly swooned.

“You don’t know what you’re asking. It’s not possible.”

“I know what I want. What I need. And I won’t return the feather until you give it to me.”

He removed his hand, leaving her mourning for his touch. “I could force you.” Though his voice was soft, his words rang with power.

“Go ahead and try.” Elena’s words were defiant, but there were tears in her eyes.

“You don’t understand what you ask. If we couple, you and I, we will open the gates of chaos.” He hovered close, leaning over her, gazing into her eyes. His scent made her dizzy.

“I don’t care. So be it.”

“No. I dare not, Señora.” Taking a step backward, he glanced around the porch, as if seeking a way to push past her and enter the clinic. She moved to block the door, legs apart and hands on her hips.

Perplexity marked his handsome features. She didn’t doubt he was strong enough to physically overpower her, but he seemed reluctant to do so.

“Please.” Now his voice held a note of supplication. “Be reasonable, Elena.”

“Don’t you want me?”

“What I want does not matter. I must do my duty and refuse you. The tasks before me will be difficult enough without the distraction of love.”

Love? That wasn’t what she was asking for, was it? The desire that raged through her seemed as far from love as a fierce hurricane from a gentle spring shower. At the same time, her intuition told her that a single night in Jorge’s arms would never be enough.

A Father's Inspiration

My latest book, Serpent’s Kiss, is dedicated to my father. He has been gone for for nearly fifteen years, but I still feel his presence, every day. During the time since his passing, the pain of loss has healed. I’ve come to understand that he'll always be with me, in my memories and in my heart.

More than any other individual, it was my dad who inspired me to read, and to write. He had the gift of words, and passed it on to his children. I recall him reading aloud to my siblings and me, folk tales, fairy stories, adventures like Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe. He told his own stories, too, inventing worlds and characters for our pleasure. There were the Gulkons, terrible demons who lived in the fire on the hearth, and Houligan, the god of snow. (I grew up in chilly, stormy New England.) I still remember sitting spellbound while Dad recounted his story of the hapless wizard Thomas Carl Sefney who had to touch his wand to every one of the monster's thousand tentacles before it consumed him.

Both my parents encouraged me to write. My first poems date from about third grade. During my childhood I wrote fantasies about Martians and ghosts, and plays about the Beatles and politics. In my adolescence, too shy to speak to any of my crushes, I poured out my adoration in anguished free verse. In my twenties and thirties, I wrote science fiction and first tried my hand at romance. Finally, in my forties, I actually managed to publish something (other than in my high school newspaper). My first thought was to call my father.

My dad and I shared favorite books, characters and authors. When he and I got talking about Sherlock Holmes or Frodo Baggins, H.P. Lovecraft or Edgar Allen Poe or Anne Rice, the rest of the family would roll their eyes and leave us to our obsessions. I never had any difficulty figuring out what gift to get him for his birthday or Father's Day. There was always some book that I had seen or heard about that I knew he'd love.

I never did introduce him to my erotica, though. I was so tempted to show him the pile of paperbacks with my name on the cover, the multiple volumes I had penned or edited. I wanted to autograph him a copy of my first novel, telling him how much he had contributed to my literary endeavors. I wanted him to be proud. However, I didn't want to make him uncomfortable. I recalled the way he reacted when I gave him Anne Rice's BDSM classic The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty - an embarrassed grin and a "oh, that's interesting". We didn't discuss that book much. Though I would have welcomed the opportunity to open up to him about my own pursuits in the world of sex and sensuality, dominance and submission, I sensed that he would rather not know.

I guess that there are just some things you can't share with your parents, no matter how close you are. But at very least, I can acknowledge him as my lifelong inspiration.
