The Safe Room Week Blitz #rabtbooktours

Thriller

Date Published: 09-10-2026

When I was fifteen years old, I made a mistake. I trusted the warm smile of a stranger called Peter Harlow, and accepted a ride home in his car.

It would be the last moment of my life I’d ever feel safe again.

The trauma of what happened that night will never leave me—and it was only the beginning. For the last nineteen years, I’ve been trapped in a nightmare of blocked numbers, violated restraining orders, and the compulsion to scan every face in every crowd, waiting for the day when his will be among them.

But I've also spent the time preparing. My home has become a fortress, with reinforced doors, perimeter cameras, and a safe room in the cellar. I've even taught my seven-year-old daughter how to call for help. When I finally have to face Peter Harlow again, I’ll be ready.

Or so I thought.

Because on the night of a furious snowstorm, a terrified stranger arrives at my gate. Emily is barefoot, bruised, and desperate for help—claiming her husband just tried to kill her.

To let her in from the storm would mean breaking every rule I've made to protect myself and my daughter—but could I live with myself if I didn’t?

But what follows is everything I've lived in fear of for all these years. First, the lights go out. Then, the internet dies. Next, the phone line goes dead—and finally, I find myself trapped inside my own safe room, watching through a camera feed as the man who stole my life for two decades walks the halls of my home, playing happy families with my little girl.

I built this fortress to keep him out. Now, it’s the only thing keeping me from protecting my child.

The Safe Room is a heart-stopping psychological thriller by bestselling author Sarah A. Denzil, the "mistress of twists." Essential reading for fans of Alice Feeney, Freida McFadden, and Caroline Kepnes.

Excerpt

“I can’t imagine you didn’t inherit my ability to sit still and do absolutely nothing. I’m the king of procrastination.”

I laughed. “This from a man who plans every minute of his day.”

“Yes, but I make certain I plan all my sitting-still time first. I might have some ideas for you.”

Poised to take note of Dad’s constructive contributions, I said, “Do tell.”

He leaned back in the chair and crossed his arms. “You could pick up a new hobby.”

…

“I could teach you to cook. Maybe. Or you could bike.”

I plopped my elbow on the table and supported my cheek in my hand. “You and Ida have tried to teach me to cook. It’s been practically impossible, and there’s only so much biking I can do.” I shook my head yet listened for something novel.

“You could sleep in.”

“Tried that.” I side-eyed my pup and exhaled.

“You could learn a craft like … crocheting or knitting.”

Two more words made the list. He waited for an enthusiastic response, which didn’t happen, but nuggets of ideas turned over in my head as I chewed my final morsel of bacon. Our landlady, Ida Clemashevski, was a creative whiz not only at cooking, but with her passions of art, acting, music, and probably crafting as well.

“There’s always fishing,” he said, cautiously optimistic. “Or get a part-time job?”

I jotted a few words next to his recommendations and drew a fish.

Dad asked, “What’s that?”

Having confirmed my lack of any artistic talent, my sketch disappeared under scribbles. “I’ll think about taking up a hobby, but meanwhile, it seems I’ll simply have to resign myself to mundane chores …” I hopped up. “Nothing exciting. Something like doing the dishes.” I juggled the serving platters, plates, and silverware and deposited them in the sink, leaving the delicate cups for a second trip.

Soap foamed under the cascade of hot water, and I scrubbed slowly to eat up at least a portion of my free time. Although Dad reached for a towel, I shooed him out of the kitchen, knowing how much he valued his predictable weekday schedule: a hearty first meal of the day, a one-mile walk around the neighborhood—rain or shine, an in-depth read of the newspaper from cover to cartoons, an exercise class at the Y, and his volunteer stint at the library.

“No doubt, by week’s end you’ll have discovered a new and more streamlined method for doing dishes. You know I love you.” He kissed my forehead and headed for the door and a day of sunshine. “But we’ve got to keep you occupied and out of trouble, or you’ll never get rid of the crazy nickname you earned.”

I called to his retreating back, “Just because I’ve been in the wrong places and involved in the resolution of several serious crimes, I really don’t think I deserve the moniker ‘Katie Wilk, the murder magnet.’”

Lila's Journey Week Blitz #rabtbooktours

Historical Fiction

Date Published: 05-19-2024

Publisher: Mustard Seed Press

It’s 1866 on the Santa Fe Trail. Sixteen-year-old Lila Bonner is forced to make a life-changing decision that leaves her frightened and alone. With help from a kindhearted stranger, Lila reaches Council Grove, Kansas, where she hopes to build a new life. Fortified with determination, and tapping into a strength she didn't know she had, Lila deals with basic survival, Indian unrest, and an epidemic. As she develops into a wise, capable young woman, an unspeakably evil plot threatens her life as well as a blossoming romance. Her fate hangs in the balance between the person who betrayed her, the man she loves, and the woman she's become.

Excerpt from Lila’s Journey

She kept up a brisk pace through the wooded path as the sun peaked in and out of the clouds, shifting the shadows of the trees. Some of the trees had shed their leaves, but the mighty oaks still clung to theirs, and they rattled in the breeze. She kept her arms under her cloak for warmth but slowed momentarily when the sound of the rattling changed. She did a quick turnaround but saw nothing. “Must have been some critter scampering about,” she said, and picked up her pace again.

It happened so fast it scarcely registered.

Large hands overpowered her and grabbed her from behind, one covered her mouth, the other circled her waist. A surge of adrenaline triggered a painful heartbeat in her chest. She screamed through the clamped hand, but the sound was choked off. Lila struggled to free her arms from inside her cloak while she wildly kicked backwards. The harder she fought, the fiercer the grip. Lila raised her leg and shot it backwards again, this time hitting a shin. A rough voice cursed in her ear.

She was lifted off her feet and shoved against a tree, snapping the side of her head against the trunk. Pain shot through her head. Dazed, she made a feeble attempt to grab the arms. A hand slapped hard against her face. Spots danced before her eyes with the disappearing daylight, then nothing.

When Lila came out of the fog of unconsciousness, she found herself in darkness. She was blindfolded. She was on a horse with someone sitting behind her, someone with unspeakable body odor whose breath reeked of whiskey. What was happening? Who has done this? She had a throbbing headache, made worse with each step of the horse over the uneven ground.

Reaching for her head, she realized her hands were bound together. Why am I tied up? This makes no sense. She was a captive and there was nothing she could do to give herself any advantage. The realization sent her into a frenzy of fear, and tears swelled under her blindfold. Dear God, what am I to do?

Now fully awake, her heart pounded as she tried to clear her head. She had no idea how long she’d been unconscious, no idea where she was, no idea who sat behind her in the saddle. She shuddered to think who her captor was and what he had in mind.

Excerpt

Curtis and his friends split up into three motel rooms ten minutes away from the cemetery they wanted to rob. They couldn’t bring them on the plane, so they had to go to a local store and get a shovel for each of them. The plan was to rob Jessie’s grave first and look for the famous ring that was fashioned in hell. “I want to see this ring,” one of them said. “I hope it doesn’t say made in hell or I will run.” They snickered at his joke except for Curtis. All their rooms were right next to each other. After hitting Jessie’s grave that night they would look through other graves and the mausoleum afterwards because there was no digging with those, then they’d go for the bigger graves, because the families may have had more money to pay for them.

After a quick dinner it was darkening. “Can we go now?” Curtis asked.

“It’s supposed to be late, but we will all take the rental car and be there in about thirty minutes. It’s getting darker at this point. I don’t think anyone will see us.”

“Have you done this before?” Curtis asked.

“No, I’ve stolen but not from a grave and this will probably be the only time.” By the time everyone was in the car it was darker, and they left. They had shovels and gardening tools in the back.

A red glow of light began to come from over the horizon. “I thought the sunset was over,” one of them in a black leathery jacket said.

“It was,” said the dark blond who appeared to be the leader. He had the most experience stealing and did not spend one day in jail for anything.

As they got out the red seemed to get bigger. After opening the trunk, they then got out shovels and began looking for the one grave with the ring. There was a large, rounded tombstone straight ahead with some fresh flowers there half dead. The leader went for that one and it read Jessie the name they were looking for. He had died almost ten years ago and there was a card against the stone. It was about how someone missed him so much and how she loved him but never told him enough and it was signed Tess. It was from his girlfriend. The leader left it open and put it back. His friends began to dig but Curtis wandered around looking for graves to start digging. “Go to the mausoleum,” the leader told him, and Curtis went that way glad Violet had no idea where he was.

As the guys dug Curtis tried opening crypts with the shovel but they didn’t come open. When he found an old one with a big crack he decided to try that one. This person had died in the 1920’s. He hit it hard a few times with the shovel and the right side fell off. Sliding the coffin out and peeking in he could not see well but there wasn’t anything buried with him of value. He put it back and tried to find another one. He kept looking for older graves because if they were buried with anything old it could be valuable.

Curtis stepped out of the crypts and saw that most of the sky had turned red accept a circle of black in the middle. They all stared at it. “What makes the sky like that?” One of them asked. No one responded.

“Guys I don’t like this,” Curtis said.

“We are almost there,” the leader said, and he made deep holes with his shovel. “Go look for crypts to steal from.” Just then he smacked into the coffin with his shovel. They dug it out and opened it. Curtis came to see. “There he is.” Exactly, Here lies Jessie just like the tombstone said. Curtis glanced up and the whole sky was red. It seemed like an omen to him but there were still pretty twinkling stars shining through. The leader pulled the ring of his finger. Examining it the design looked like hell fire and he check on the inside. It said made in Hades. He wanted to throw it but pawning it would be a better idea. He put the ring in his pocket, and they began reburying Jessie.

They kept looking around the graveyard for ghosts and zombies coming to get them for revenge, but they didn’t. If anything, Jessie would have been glad the ring was gone and being the good person that he wouldn’t hurt anyone. They finished covering the grave. “Don’t worry. We’ll pawn it as fast as we can,” he told Curtis.

“If and when we find a pawn shop,” one of them said. Curtis was the only one uneasy and they couldn’t drive away fast enough. He would never do this again and was sorry he broke the man’s crypt marble.

The sky had stayed red for the rest of the night. When morning came it seemed like a dream but they needed to find food and a pawn shop. There were still days left in their stay in Michigan to do as they wished after finding what they needed.

After Curtis called Violet the leader wanted to tell them his decision. “I easily found a pawn shop in the phone book, but it’s not close. So, I have decided we have more to steal, and we can pawn that before we go back to Canada where we won’t get caught. Is that ok?” he asked Curtis.

“That’s fine. It’s only a ring and I’m not even staying with it,” he responded.

“Yes, and it must be worth so much. We can split it just tell your little lady back home your business was doing well.” Curtis nodded in agreement. They spent the day looking for places to rob and eat.

While they ate Chinese food in a motel room the leader made his announcement. “We will rob an old mansion. It’s old but they look like they have money. Tomorrow me and Anthony will go and see if there’s an easy way in and what they leave open or unlocked.” All they could do was nod. “Then we’ll come back when they’re gone and get you Sawyer. Curtis we need someone to drive the car. You can get out, but you need to be ready to drive. Hopefully these people are going on summer vacation. How’s that sound?” he asked Curtis.

“Sounds fine. If we go in through the backyard it’s harder for people to see what we are doing,” he suggested.

“Good idea,” the leader Tristan said. He turned on the TV while they had a beer and relaxed. “It’s funny how rich people like to come out here thinking that it’s nice and peaceful and then get robbed.”

Confessions of a Third-Rate Goddess Week Blitz #rabtbooktours

Memoir / Humor

Date Published: 11-28-2023

Publisher: 9th House

At the end of the 20th century, while mainstream media popularized an expensively dressed version of modern adult life, a rawer, and definitely weirder, reality was playing out off-screen. Columnist and zinester Kathy Biehl chronicled that from a singular and heavily trafficked intersection - collision point, some might say - of young professionals, performing and outsider artists, Unitarians, gays and lesbians, metaphysicians, traveling statues, and people who defied categorizing, many of whom wanted to sleep together, and some of whom actually did.

This essay collection, a followup to Eat, Drink & Be Wary: Cautionary Tales, romps through antics, sagas, and questionable behavior that Biehl witnessed, experienced and, at times, instigated. With eyebrow firmly arched, she snapshots sexual tension, ambivalence, and confusion; perils of fan mail and professional caroling; Groucho impersonators, snooping repairmen, and divine manifestations; ludicrous journeys, backstage dramas, and driveway parties; close-ups with a strange, frightening disease; her own, accidental attainment of goddesshood; and other mystery-marvels of life on the bridge to the millennium. All of it really happened. Nobody could make this stuff up.

Burning Desire

This is not a longstanding, conscious goal. I had to see a couple actually doing it before I formulated this desire. I was sitting at a booth in a ridiculously goofy Hawaiian restaurant, a worthy successor to the tradition of the long-departed Trader Vic’s. (That place had a cachet so powerful that a group of Irish musicians kept a flower-shirted vigil there every night of its last week in business, as if to store up mock Polynesian ambiance against a dreary future of non-accessorized drinking.)

The Hawaiian newcomer offered an ideal setting for lounging about on the receiving end of a garish exotic drink with an equally garish paper parasol. The bar was an island adrift in a mural of sea gulls, clouds, and foamy tide, against which Don Ho sang away with a happy children’s chorus. Beneath its stockpile of Mylar-tipped swizzle sticks and totem-faced ceramic mugs sat a couple who’d opted for the most adventuresome entry on the specialty drink menu. Their straws connected them to a wide-rimmed bowl, big enough to require two hands for carrying, that contained the alcoholic equivalent of the kitchen sink. At the center lept flames.

“I want a man who’ll drink fire with me,” I said to my companion, who is used to such out-of-the-blue revelations. The thought didn’t surprise him; he’s heard something about wanting to shoot fire off my fingertips. He responded enthusiastically, and not out of reciprocal interest or even friendly solidarity. He wouldn’t mind a man who would drink fire with him, either.

The line keeps returning. Days later I think, “I want a man who’ll drink fire with me.” I suspect the thought may contain deep meaning. A Theory immediately begins taking shape.

It resurfaces during a phone conversation with my accountant. I mention the Hawaiian bar excursion. “I want a man who’ll drink fire with me,” I tell him, and he roars with laughter, not entirely as a result of the tension from impending IRS deadlines. As I defend the statement it rises to the level of a Fundamental Truth of my existence.

The concept has now taken on nearly every critical characteristic of the elusive target of my quest. It has fast become my personal Grail.

The image transcends the mere act of sticking a straw in a flame-kissed beverage. It reveals an entire personality. It shows me a complex blend of bravado and flamboyance that makes light of itself, of calculated risk-taking coupled with recklessness and humor, of élan and adventure expressed with panache.

He is a natural showman, skilled in the grand gesture, attentive to appearances without attaching excessive important to them for their own sake. For that reason he doesn’t take himself too seriously. People can start and think all they want he he enjoys himself; what matter are the opinions of people who’ve lost the ability to play?

He’s spontaneous and prone to cast off responsibility in ways that endanger no one. However modest his normal habits, my fire drinker is reckless enough to ingest liquids in colors not found in nature, to throw caution to the wind.

But I detect profound depths, too. Drinking fire demonstrates that he is willing to jump into an experience, even if it’s potentially dangerous. Even if he risks getting scorched. The act places him within flirting range of the flame as well as of me, and who’s to say which could be more threatening?

The risk doesn’t daunt him, though. He saunters up to the flame without hesitation. His sharp, agile mind and natural intuition tell him exactly where to place the straw to keep from getting hurt. And, most importantly, he shares the experience with me. We sit straw to straw, on equal terms, growing tipsy from the same source, and, when the last drop is drained, holding our straws over the flame and watching the heat shrivel them into a misshapen residue that will perplex the bartender.

Granted, this metaphor leaves out a few things, like not smoking and not hunting for sport, speaking a foreign language, and being equally comfortable in jeans or a tuxedo. All of those were on a list of a hundred-plus characteristics I actually wrote out a few years ago. (Don’t worry; I can’t find it now.) Perhaps it is my previous inability to formulate this desire succinctly that has posed the impediment to attaining Relationship. Naming is a step to claiming, they say.

So here goes: I want a man who’ll drink fire with me. You can laugh all you like. Everyone who hears it does. It’s a silly idea. And that’s why it’s so appealing.

It makes me laugh, too. And I’ll still be laughing when you see a flaming bowl between a pair of self-possessed characters engrossed in mirth and each other. Look with a woman with a raised eyebrow and a mysterious smile. That’ll be me.

Orphaned at a young age, Tamera Austen knows nothing about her family. Certainly nothing about the strange impulses she can’t control, and make her fear for her sanity. Moving to the Hudson Valley to make a fresh start, she is quickly assimilated into the close community there. But her new friends have their own secrets.

Kester Kazakis recognizes the newcomer as a fellow shapeshifter, but strangely, she doesn’t seem to be aware of shapeshifters. As he struggles to find a way to introduce her to their world, he is increasingly aware that she is the only one for him.

When Tamera’s long-lost uncle appears on the scene, his sinister air has the community rallying around Tamera. But he’s not so easily dissuaded from his mission: To keep the caracal shifter line pure.

Scene – The First Change

Kester came awake fast, every sense on alert. His cat was edgy, pushing at him. Kitt wanted out. It took a moment to register where he was. Tamera's room. The nightmare. He could feel her by his side, radiating warmth despite the fact that somehow the blanket had fallen away. Groping for the blanket carefully so as to not wake her, he froze as his fingers encountered... fur.

What the...?

Cautiously he leaned up on one elbow. His enhanced shifter senses allowed him to see through the murky dark and as his vision adjusted, he saw stretched out beside him, asleep in an attitude of blissful abandon, a large feline, perhaps a little larger than his own Kitt,

Inside, he could feel his cat nature stir, the animal rumbling with content. That was good. Kitt was sensing the other animal's emotional state and reflecting that. He found he was smiling, pleased that his presence had given Tamera enough of a sense of safety that she'd let down her guard, even inadvertently, thus allowing her cat to come forward.

Ooh-kay. Now what to do? YiaYia was a few hundred miles away, and he wasn't about to call his sister over. On the other hand, Kitt was purring; obviously his cat felt no danger. He sat up, and reaching to the side turned on the small bedside lamp. He turned his attention back to Tamera, studying her. Her coat was short, a thick, rich looking pelt and she had long legs with wide, splayed paws, relaxed now in sleep.  She appeared very much like a miniature cougar except for the reddish tan color to her coat and long black tufts off the tips of her ears. He didn't recognize the breed, but whatever Tamera was, she was not a domestic cat. This was some kind of wild animal.

Not without trepidation, Kester slid his hand lightly along her back, feeling the thickness of her fur.

"Tamera," he called in a soft voice, too soft to waken a human but knowing even fast asleep, her cat would hear and waken. "Wake up now, Tamera."

The eyelids parted, and slanted blue eyes gazed out at him, blinking sleepily. He saw the moment she became aware, the widening of her eyes. The ears swept back, an involuntary response, and she leaped up from the mattress. Unaccustomed to the new form, her legs scrambled for purchase, and she tumbled off the bed, sprawling in a heap on the floor. He winced as sharp claws scrabbled on the smoothly polished wooden floor, but she was only pulling her legs beneath her, crouching where she had landed.

Her stare stayed on his face, a good sign, Kester thought. There was more bewilderment in those wide eyes than fear, so he slid off the bed, approaching slowly. He crouched on his heels, extending one hand tentatively.

"You did it," he told her, unable to suppress the grin splitting his face. "You did it all by yourself. And you're gorgeous, girl."

The blue eyes blinked again, and he ventured to shuffle a little closer, extending one hand. She permitted him to lay his hand on her neck, and his fingers slid into the fur, scratching a little behind her ear. Her head tilted, leaning into his fingers, and Kester relaxed chuckling.

"You are one gorgeous cat. Yep," he nodded as she turned her head back toward him. "Don't know what kind you are, though. You want to see yourself?"

Her jaws opened, and an odd trilling sound emerged. He laughed, and rose to his feet. "Hang on." Looking around, he saw her cell phone laying on the dresser. He picked it up and turned the screen on. Finding the camera app, he turned to look at her.

"Okay, this is going to be your very first ever photograph," he told her. "You've gotta look your best."

He came over and rolled her gently to her side. "Here, now pull in your front paws under your shoulder... that's right. Now, raise your head and look toward me. Perfect. That's the classic cat lounge, no matter what species."

He stood back, raising the camera. "You want to prick your ears up. You can't see them, but they're amazing. Here." He held up his left hand, snapping his fingers. "Yeah, there they go."

He took a couple of shots in quick succession, then lowered the camera, coming to sit on the floor beside her.

"This is you."

He held out the camera for her to look. She stared for a long moment, then bobbed her head forward, her nose butting at the phone, then looking at him. That wasn't hard to interpret.

"Okay, we'll google you." He looked at her assessingly, then tapped at the screen. "Let's see... medium to small wild cat, long legs, huge tufted ears. Well, hello, hello."

He looked at the screen intently, clicking over to Wiki. "Yep, here you are. A caracal. Looks like you're a wild cat that's native to Africa, Middle East and India."

A feline snort had him grinning. He looked back at the phone.

"It seems caracals are pretty popular. It says here they're mostly nocturnal... that could be why you Changed in the night, maybe. Also they don't make much noise, aside from purring when happy, growling and hissing when not." He set the phone on the end of the bed. "Hey, how about if I Change too. Kitt can help you more, with how to navigate with your body. We'll get you up and walking, and since we can communicate via telepathy in our animal forms, you can ask questions."

Her head dipped once, and he grinned. "Well, you got 'yes' down."

A growl rumbled in her throat, and the slanted eyes widened again in apparent surprise. Kester laughed, rising to his feet. "Okay, one Maine Coon incoming!

He reached for his cat, and Kitt sprang forward, eager to be out to investigate the newcomer. The air around him zinged, like the crackle of electricity, and then he was on four paws, padding forward to sniff noses with Tamera. Her ears were high, rotated forward in curiosity, and he sat down, curling his plumy tail about his forepaws.

We can talk this way. He sent the words through the mental path.

The large ears twitched, the tufted tips quivering. Try it. He urged. Form a thought, then say it, but instead of saying it with your lips, say it in your mind.

The words came, whispering, tentative. Like this?

Inside he smiled, and his tongue came out to rasp across her cheek. Good. Now strengthen your tone. It will become easier with time, and eventually will become as natural as talking is between humans.

Can I talk to you anywhere?

We're limited by distance. It's generally considered to be a range of a mile or so. Katerina told me she reached across several miles to contact Jacinth when she'd been attacked by a dog, but either that was the exigency of her situation, or perhaps because it was a Djinn she had a connection to, although she tells me Jacinth isn't in general telepathic.

Now. He butted her head with his. Let's get you up and walking. I want you to stand up.

Her expressive ears lowered a little. I'm comfortable here.

He sent her an impression of his amusement. I'm sure you are. You'll be comfortable standing up and walking, too, with some practice. Come on, up with you.

She rose unsteadily, but her paws went every which-way and she wound up sprawled on the floor again. Kester sternly suppressed his amusement.

Try sitting first. Raise up on your front paws, straighten the legs, then get your hindquarters beneath you. There you go, that's right.

He padded over to where she stood, nuzzling her in approval.

This is harder than I thought. I feel like I'm going to fall right over.

You're doing fine. Now push up with the hind legs, and stand.

She obeyed, and lifted herself to stand on all fours, her long legs splayed awkwardly, her head lowered as she strove for balance.

I don't think I can walk. I don't know what leg to move first.

This time he let her sense his amusement. Your cat knows. You have to get out of her way, let her come forward. Like the telepathy, at first it takes a conscious effort, but it will become natural once you get the hang of it.

She took an incautious step forward and staggered, her claws scrabbling on the floor as she fought to stay upright. He leaned his massive frame against hers, steadying her, and she stood, her sides heaving as she panted for breath. He waited until she seemed to be standing easily before he moved away.

You're still trying to intentionally move your legs, it doesn't work like that. Your cat comes forward and the movement is instinctive to her. A thought came to him, and he grinned to himself. Let's try this.

His paw shot out, claws sheathed, but buffeting her across the head. He leaped back as her ears swept back, laying flat against her skull, and her muzzle wrinkled, jaws parted as she hissed a warning just before she sprang. Anticipating her move, he angled his haunches and sprang lightly onto the bed and stood looking down at her.

See? There ya go.

Her head tilted as she peered at him, her tail lashing back and forth. Her ears swiveled forward, and her paws tapped an excited beat on the floor. I did it!

You did. He watched as she prowled about the room, snuffling at the table and chair legs, and bumping her nose against the glass of the balcony door. She snorted, and turned easily, with the natural grace of the feline, exploring the room with her new senses.

Things smell weird.

He sent her a mental laugh. They will. You'll get used to it.

He lowered himself to the mattress, reclining gracefully on the edge of the bed where he could watch her. She padded over, raising her head to snuffle at him, and they rubbed muzzles.

Okay this is pretty cool, she admitted. Her slanted gaze surveyed the bed. I wonder if I could manage to jump up there.

You'll never know til you try. He added a warning as she crouched, shifting her weight back onto her hindquarters. From the little I had a chance to read, caracals are built for jumping into the air. They can catch birds on the wing. Don't give it too much effort or you'll overshoot the bed.

Got it. She adjusted the depth of her stance. Her tail lashed once, and she sprang up to the bed beside him. Without apparent effort, she lay prone, her paws stretched before her.

Well done!

So how does an African wild cat get to be in America? She lay her head on her paws, angled a little toward him. Behind her, only the very tip of her tail moved, swaying lazily to and fro.

I don't know. How did any of us get to be shifters for that matter? There's all kinds of theories. You'll learn them all, he warned her, his muzzle wrinkling. YiaYia, as Warden, will likely find an Elder to tutor you, not only in the laws but also our history, the different shifter species, the territories and Wardens and Councils on the various continents, that sort of thing. Things we all learned growing up.

He was alert for signs of agitation as Tamera digested this. He wasn't sure how he would be able to deal with her if her cat became upset. They were about the same height, although he had more mass, heavily muscled and furred. It was unlikely that she could hurt him, if he had to subdue her, but he didn't want to hurt her. Her whiskers trembled a little, and the furred tail did lash back and forth a little, but there was surprisingly little other evidence of agitation.

You doing okay? He prompted, butting her with his head.

Her reply was instant. Yes. I'm just amazed. I never thought such a thing was even possible! She lifted her head to peer at her front paws. These are huge! And the claws are sharp, too. I think I might have scratched the floor, I didn't mean to.

Be glad they're retractable. Just think how awkward if you were a cheetah.

Those slanted eyes widened, then blinked at him. Cheetah's can't retract their claws? I didn't know that.

They can semi-retract them, not all the way.

Wow. Tamera suddenly flopped over onto her side to lay prone, her long hind legs stretching almost to the end of the mattress. A rough purr rumbled in her chest. I feel so lazy. I want to just lay here and do a whole lot of nothing.

Kester chuckled. Welcome to feline life. You might not want to Change if you're on a tight deadline or have an appointment or something. Your cat may well decide it's not worth it to bother herself with.

Tamera's sides heaved as she chuffed in amusement. I could get used to this. Too bad you can't bottle it and sell it as stress management.
