“Smile,” Rubén told her. “It’s showtime.”

She nodded and lifted her chin, wincing a little in the flashing camera lights.

As three hand-picked paparazzi snapped pictures of him and Drina from all angles, Rubén counted to thirty before he steered Drina past them to the music room.

“Wow,” Drina murmured as they passed the piano for the ballroom.

A massive chandelier gleamed from the lofty ceiling, its decorative crystals reflecting the soft white light and dancing spots across the ivory walls and the chattering, laughing guests. The live band played instrumental music at the far end of the rectangular room, where Esme’s team had set up fancy tables and chairs for the speech and dinner portion of the evening.

“Why do you keep this room locked up? It’s magnificent.”

He shrugged. “It’s a bitch to clean.”

His blunt answer steepled Drina’s eyebrows. “My, what consideration. I’m sure the housekeeping staff appreciates it,” she teased and pulled him onto the dance floor alongside several other couples. “Let’s dance.”

As her arms slid around his shoulders, he rested his hands on her waist. Her body heat and strawberry aroma enveloped him. Groaning, he gripped the thick fabric of her dress so hard that it bunched and the band of his rings bit into his skin. She rested her head against his chest, and her hair teased his nose. They swayed, lost in each other as though they were the only people around. A foolish notion, one he shouldn’t revel in. If he did, he would ravage her on the floor.

“You have a good turnout,” she murmured while he twirled her about. She spun back into his embrace. “Are any of these people your friends?”

“Hardly.” This was his world. Glamour, power, prestige. The public mask he wore to hide his sinister nature. “You’re swimming in dangerous waters. The sooner you realize I can buy and discard all these sharks and guppies with a flick of my wrist, the better off you’ll be.”

“I’m well aware you’re king of the sharks.”

He snorted, holding her closer. “You’re a barracuda. Lithe grace and sharp teeth.”

“Ooh, I like that.” She nipped at his chin. “I’ll never be a guppy.”

Damn right. As the song ended, he guided her off the dance floor. Duty called.

Character Interview

What’s your name, and who are you in your world?

I’m Drina Cabrera. My life has gone through some traumatic changes lately. Months ago, I was busy

raising my daughter as a single mom and working as an editor for a publishing house. Now, I’m trapped

with the Lozano Cartel. Maybe “trapped” is too strong of a word. All I want to do is go home and see my

beautiful daughter again, but that’s not possible. Not yet. Or so my current captor keeps telling me.

Oh, wow. It sounds like you’ve been through a rough time, and that it’s not over with. If there are

any questions you want to bypass, just tell me. For my readers’ sake, how about you give us a

visual. What do you look like?

Long, straight black hair, dark eyes, tawny skin. I’m on the skinny side, though that’s not my fault. I

blame the monsters who held me captive for five months.

I do, too, but you look great. Healthy, I mean. So something must’ve improved. What’s your goal in this story?

To survive and be reunited with Sera, my eight-year-old daughter. Thankfully, she’s safe with my

mother, but I’m counting the days until I can see her again.

It must be so hard to be separated from your child. What conflicts are you facing?

Where do I start? The Tronco de la Muerte Cartel used me as forced labor at their drug distribution

center before Rubén Lozano crashed back into my life. We had once dated, so when I saw him at the

facility, I begged him for help. He refused at first, then he bought me from the slavers only to keep me

for himself. Now, I’m struggling not to fall under his spell. He’s the most seductive, charismatic man

I’ve ever met. He’s also dangerous, the leader of the Lozano Cartel. He claims he has to keep me for

my own protection, but I suspect he has some ulterior motive in mind.

Now that you’re with Rubén, how would you describe your life?

Sometimes, I’m happy with him. He makes me feel safe when I know I’m not.

Other times, I long for what I’ve lost. My freedom. My sense of self. My family.

I can understand that. What is people’s first impression of you?

That I’m an ice queen. I’ve always been a little standoffish, even before the abduction. Rubén,

however, knows it’s just an act. He sees me beyond the brick wall I’ve erected around myself. He

knows me for who I truly am, and that scares me.

Are you book-smart, self-taught, or widely-experienced?

All three, I like to think. My years at the university opened my eyes to different kinds of people and

cultures while my childhood experiences taught me that people are inherently good, though evil

certainly does exist. The past few months have driven home the fact that darkness is all around, lurking

where you least expect it.

Who is the biggest role model in your life?

My mother, Dolores. She’s brave, strong, and a successful restaurant owner. After my father died,

Dolores helped form an anti-cartel resistance group in our hometown of Savillaruz. I couldn’t be prouder

of her.

What is your biggest fear?

As much as I’ve tried to keep my wall up, I’ve fallen in love with Rubén. That doesn’t mean I forgive

him for keeping me against my will, but I understand why he felt he needed to do so.

One day, I’m going to get home to my family, but I don’t want to leave Rubén behind. I love them all.

Yet my resistance-fighter mother and cartel jefe lover will never get along. Never make peace.

My greatest fear is that to have one of them, I’ll lose the other.

That’s a troublesome possibility. One last question… What other character from your book do

you think your author, Amber Daulton, should write a book about? Care to tell us why?

During a fundraising event, I met Rubén’s former sister-in-law, Lourdes. She’s a surprisingly sweet

person for being a cartel princess and deserves better than what life has given her. Luckily, Amber is

already hard at work writing Lourdes’s happily ever after with Rubén’s best friend, Enrique. Their book,

Corrupting His Wife, will be available in April 2026.

Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog. I’ve enjoyed this chat!
