I’m not ready to lose it all for a beautiful dark temptation

Blurb

Tomás

I’ve lost everything.

Forced into a prison masking as a school, I find myself in the crosshairs of more than one killer. My savior? The arrogant prick who wants to control me. Kieran is a nightmare wrapped in a seductive package and when he sets his sights on me I don’t know whether to fight him or kiss him.

Kieran

I am the eldest bastard of one of the four founders of Arcadia University, and I will do anything to see my family fall.

The secrets I’ve kept hidden behind my heart now threaten to bury me alive with the arrival of Tomás. He consumes my space, my thoughts, my nightmares. I hate him for how he makes me feel. This toxic attraction between us forces me to question what matters most—vengeance, power, love. But Tomas doesn’t fit into my world of lies and violence and I’m not ready to lose it all for a beautiful dark temptation.

Excerpt

Kieran

The front door opened and closed as I put my dish away. Getting under Tomás’s skin made me feel alive. I couldn’t kill him yet, but I could fuck with him.

He straightened when he caught sight of me. A hint of pain crossed his features, but he quickly schooled it before he grabbed a glass of water. Without paying me any attention, he downed the water. I couldn’t help but take in his profile. The soft line of his jaw, the smooth suntanned skin, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed. I had the urge to cup his throat, feel his pulse. He lowered the cup and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. Why my dick chose that moment to twitch made no sense. I wasn’t attracted to him. No way. My erection in the field had to do with the adrenaline rush, not him.

He rinsed the cup and put it away. “What?” he finally said. “You want to finish what we started?”

The image of him stretched out on top of me was what came to mind. My dick against his thigh. And the fucker had grinded against me. I’d felt his erection too before he jumped off me as if his ass were on fire. Then he ran.

If I expected Fox to let go of Dasher, then I had to stop reacting to this prick like I wanted to shove him out a window. I still didn’t know Tomás’s true bloodline. Murdering him would cause attention and right now, that would be more dangerous than letting him live.

“I think we got off to a rocky start,” I said.

He snorted. “Really? I hadn’t noticed.”

Cocky fucker almost made me smile. “You’re a part of the four whether we like it or not. Means that we might be family.” Bile rose in the back of my throat. I already knew we weren’t blood related, but he had to belong to one of the four.

That made him snap his mouth shut. I could see the want of his comeback. He vibrated with it. It took several seconds of silence for him to finally speak.

“I’m not your family,” he said in a tone that seemed absolute. As if he knew without a doubt that he had no blood ties to any of us. “My family is dead.”

My brain buzzed with all the questions I wanted to ask him. Why was he here? Who sent him here? What was his background? Who are you?

He lifted his hand to wipe his face and winced. Dropping his hand to his side he scowled at me. “You’re fucking psycho. It was just a game.” He made a hasty retreat to his room, holding on to his ribs.

A game?

The asshole needed to learn the rules of this place.

I heard his door close but not the chair. I breathed in a moment, just letting myself calm down.

Not happening.

Reaching his door, I pushed it open without knocking. It almost slammed against the wall. Everything I’d meant to say drained away at the picture of Tomás bare chested in front of me. His pants were unbuttoned and hanging low on his hips. Every bit of him exposed awakened something feral inside of me. A desire so deep, I feared releasing it. I suddenly forgot how to breathe, to talk, to make sense of shit.

“What the fuck?”

The angry sound of his voice snapped me out of my stupidity, and I remembered why I entered in the first place. “You think this is a game? Where the hell do you think you are? Who the hell do you think goes to school here? Because they aren’t friends, they aren’t life-long partners. They’re sons and daughters of assassins, drug dealers, mafia, cartel, and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” I should’ve shut up. But I couldn’t. For some reason, I needed him to understand. “Nothing in this place is a game. It’s a test to measure your strength, and out there,” I pointed at the window, “beyond the campus, they’ll rip you apart. So if I were you, I’d really start thinking about alliances. Consider who has your back before someone drives a knife right through it.”

His eyes widened, his mouth opened and closed, and I felt that stirring inside of me that burned all my nerve endings. Then he had to make it worse. “Why do you hate me so much?”

About the Author

I began reading my mom’s Harlequin Presents in the fifth grade, and from the first story I knew I wanted to write romance novels. Love is the most powerful emotion we can experience, and I adore happy ever afters. I write about the very ordinary woman thrust into an extraordinary circumstance, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate highrollers.  I try to write characters who aren't cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box. I strive to write complex characters full of flaws, heroes and heroines who find redemption through love.

Excerpt for His Playmate

Diego was stopped from leaving Wolf’s bed by a handcuff around his wrist. He had sat leaning against the headrest for the entire day, his body throbbing and his feet aching.

The warmly lit bedroom was large with a connecting bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. It had wide-paned windows that looked out into the darkness. Diego chewed on his lower lip, growing agitated. A cigarette would be nice, especially out on the balcony in the cool night air.

This was some sort of mental torture. Wolf was treating Diego like he was nothing more than a captive. Diego didn’t have much energy left; Wolf was purposely weakening him. Wolf was forcing Diego to be reliant on him. Diego didn’t like being dependent on anyone because it made him powerless. As much as Diego hated to acknowledge it, Wolf had dominated him, and Diego had already submitted.

The door opened, and Wolf walked into the bedroom, a riding crop in hand. Diego couldn’t stop his body from involuntarily tensing, and he narrowed his eyes at the weapon.

“And I thought you had forgotten about me,” Diego said, his tone sarcastic.

“How could I? You’re all I think about,” Wolf said, mocking him.

Diego rolled his eyes. “Get lost.”

Wolf stopped by the bed, never taking his gaze off Diego as he asked, “Did you think about what you’ve done?”

Diego glared at him, but he didn’t say anything. He had tried not to focus on what had happened because losing brought him a great deal of shame. But the memories of what he’d experienced at Wolf’s hands kept filling his mind anyway. Diego had realized that Wolf was always a step ahead of him.

“Diego …”

“Yes, I have,” Diego said bitterly.

“Are you going to strike at me again?” Wolf asked.

“No.”

Wolf looked pleased. “Good. If I’d known the cane would make you submit, I would have used it on you earlier, pet.”

A spike of heat shot through Diego’s body and pooled in his groin. Diego had slept with plenty of men in the past, but no one had taken ownership over him the way that Wolf did. Diego had gotten used to taking care of himself and being independent. The thought of losing his freedom was terrifying. His captor was a threat in more ways than just punishments. “Stop calling me that.”

“You seem to like it,” Wolf said.

There was a small part of Diego that did like it. Because of the way Wolf said it … his voice deep and smooth. The word seemed to roll off of Wolf’s tongue naturally. There was a hint of something in Wolf’s tone when he called Diego his pet, and it wasn’t hate. But it was his enemy saying it to him, and Diego knew that he shouldn’t want to belong to Wolf.

Diego kept eye contact with Wolf, and it was starting to stir up a feeling of vulnerability in him. Here Diego was, naked and chained to a bed, his captor looming over him with a dark smile on his lips and a riding crop in his hand. No one had done this to Diego before, and that unnerved him

René

Asking Nico for help is the last thing I want to do. After breaking up with him four years ago, I am not ready to be reminded of all the reasons I fell in love with him, to begin with. Avoiding him becomes impossible when he is still the only man I trust to protect me and my family from a rival mafia boss intent on ruining our lives. His every touch reignites my passions. Though I fight it, and will never admit it, my feelings for my ex had never died. As the heat between us flames to new heights, he tempts me with the possibility of a second chance at love.

Excerpt (Chapter One) 411 wordsrated PG

Youve got this,” René told herself. She straightened her posture, and faced the door she had walked out of three years ago with no intention of ever returning. Its not like I am crawling back. If it werent for Onika I wouldnt even be here right now.

Although René was a first-generation American and had lived in the states her entire life, her family was big, loud, close, and international. With her childhood summer vacations spent in Jamaica, she and Onika, who had only moved to Felicidad two years ago, might as well have been twins. They spend almost every day of their breaks together.

Two years ago, René had offered to help Onika get settled, but her stubborn-ass cousin rejected her offer. Now René was a target with few options.

It was too late to lament her current circumstances, her business was at stake.

Okay, her life and Onikas were also at stake which technically was more important.

But damn, René had worked her ass off to become a hairstylist whose growing popularity resulted in two successful salons. Shed spent years renting chairs in other peoples salons while doing hair in her parentsextension. Nights, weekends, and friendships were sacrificed on the altar of her dream. Finally, success had started trickling into her life. And now there was a threat to everything she had poured her soul into building, not to mention her life.

She wanted to curse Onikas name, but Onika was only part of the equation. Who knew her friendship with Jessie would one day up the stakes to her dilemma?

There she went, hyping herself up when she needed a calm head to deal with that man behind the door. If anyone had gotten her wrapped up in drama she would have bet the bank on him—Nico Donini.

All this time she had avoided his name. In her mind, he was an abstract idea. Because thinking his name brought inevitable memories. Not the rip your heart out memories but the warm, cuddle sessions that plagued her after shed ended things. They whispered to her of the what-ifs she could never voice.

Desperation had driven her here but it didnt cancel out Nico as her wisest choice. Who was she fooling? She was not ready to face Nico. She spun to her car once again.

Before her first full step, the voice still haunting her dreams said, Running again? You havent changed, have you?

Please Note: Both Inescapable and Inevitable can be read as standalone novels in the expanding Oliveri Mafia series

Guest Post

What drew you to the romance sub-genre you write?

I think a lot of women’s secret fantasies involve falling in love with dangerous men, although in reality we avoid danger in our daily lives. That sense of the forbidden, of getting away with something, is a seductive lure for me as a reader and now as an author, which is why the first full story that came to mind was a mafia romance. I still love my wholesome romance, with lots of steam, and most sub-genres under romance. One day I may even venture into those stories, but for now I have a lot of mafia men in my head that are demanding their stories be told.

When did you start reading romance?

I was probably 14-16 when I started reading my mom’s romance novels. They were the historicals, Judith McNaught, Julie Garwood, Jude Devereaux, and so many of the big names wrote in those days. I used to sneak them out of her room to read, not knowing she knew I was reading them until I was in high school. Then we would fangirl over the heroes and heroines. When I started feeding my book addiction, she started “borrowing” my books like I used to “borrow” her clothes. It made for a lot of fun debates.

How do you come up with your ideas?

I’m a pantser, writing without a plan, for the most part. But there is one thing that always sparks my ideas: the meet-cute. When boy meets girl, I know nothing about them, but their first interaction, the chemistry I feel between them is so vivid that it helps me create their backstories and a plot that challenges their budding love.

When I decided to seriously write, I had a difficult time deciding what genre to write in. I love Romance, Epic Fantasy, and Young Adult Fantasy. I finally settled on Romance because it is by far the genre I read and love the most. It spans so many sub-genres that I couldn’t go wrong.

The idea for my first romance novel, Inescapable came pretty easy to me.

Writing was a different ball game. There was a huge learning curve for me, but I actually enjoy the process. Even the days where words hide from me and the story stalls because I haven’t quite gotten the right mix of plot and character to move the story on.

When it came to writing Inevitable, I initially had no intention of writing a series. The couple featured in this sophomore novel, René and Nico, kept hounding me for a resolution to their broken love story. My readers wanted to them to be happy, and they wanted to be happy. So I explored their personal histories and the reason for their previous relationship ending and came out with a book about two beautifully flawed people who needed each other. Of course, I mixed their love story in with action and the dangers of Nico’s mafia lifestyle.

I’m really excited for the reception of this book, and my other author friends keep telling me this won’t go away. It makes sense. Each book is my child and once it’s published my child is leaving the safety of my home for the brave unknown of the world. What matters is that readers find the book entertaining and they feel an emotional connection to the ups and downs my book babies go through.

Author Bio

Melverna McFarlane loves stories with Happily Ever Afters. After years of characters taunting her imagination with their potential, she decided it was time to write her own scorching hot romances. She moved to America from Jamaica at a young age, and has lived up and down the east coast most of her life. The bitterly cold winter of 2013 was the last straw, driving her back to island life—this time to Hawaii. When not writing, she is reading romance, YA, and Fantasy, country hopping, or vicariously obsessing over other peoples cats (she awaits the day her landlords succumb to the truth: feline domination should be everyones goal in life).

LIA

I drive to a neighborhood gym. I doubt my so-called suspension will allow me to use police facilities. Even if it did, putting myself into a demeaning situation—the female cops ignoring me while the male ones make snide comments—isn’t at the top of my to-do list. Better to keep far, far away from that.

Once inside the place, I grab a locker then dress in my workout clothes, black leggings and a matching sports bra. Deliberately bypassing the weights and other equipment, I stop at a speed bag, also known as a punching bag. The kind shown on TV and in movies where a fighter prepares for the championship bout. Gloved up, I picture Crastano’s, Fratrazelli’s, Hickenstone’s, and my perp’s revolting faces on the thing.

My first slug is hard. My next way past that. I’m soon breathless but totally stoked.

Then I get serious and imagine Dimitri’s putrid features on the thing. Next to him are the Petrov Family assassins who destroyed Jash.

I’m pounding so hard, my hair comes loose from the scrunchy, strands sticking to my sweaty cheeks. It’s not enough, endless rage still burning within me. I go at the bag with unending malice. It’s my only option at this point, and I want to fucking annihilate it. To send the thing sailing across the—

Damn.” A guy my age stops next to me. “You’re on fire, babe.”

Fuck. Off.” Teeth gritted, I get in his space. “I am not your goddamn babe.”

He lifts his hands, his eyes wide. “Sorry to have bothered…”

I don’t hear the rest. I’m too busy taking out my fury on the bag.

The others who pass me keep a wide berth. They must have seen me snarl at that other guy. I should feel bad but don’t. Losing Jash in such a horrible way keeps draining away my sympathy and humanity. Before long, I’ll be exactly like Dimitri.

I can’t wait.

Winded, I slow somewhat.

A young woman makes eye contact. I refuse to look away. She does so quickly.

I’m so worked up, I’m ready to challenge anyone here who regards me the wrong way, says any-goddamn-thing, or gets too near my—

Standing in the doorway is a man who doesn’t belong here, unless he’s wearing a business suit because he’s a promoter or a sports agent.

Neither seems likely given the lack of talent in this room.

Yet, he keeps standing there, his gaze riveted to me.

I throw a punch at the bag and miss.

He arches one dark eyebrow, a smile tugging at his chiseled mouth.

To say he’s handsome is understating the fact by a thousand percent. His all-American good looks have a bad boy edge enhanced by his dark wavy hair kissing his forehead, his lushly lashed eyes, and his impressive stubble. Five o’clock shadow at two in the afternoon is quite a feat.

My nipples peak. Something deep inside my pussy stirs.

I don’t try to stop it. This is the first good feeling I’ve had in too long, even if I don’t understand why he’s here and slowly perusing me from head to toe.

If he’s not denying himself, why should I?

I stop at the precious package between his legs, his spectacular erection pressing against his pants.

Warmth pours through me. Already weakened from my workout, I have trouble standing.

Who are you?

If he’s a promoter or agent, maybe I should consider boxing as a fallback career, should my future in policing actually be over.

However…

If he’s from the IAB—the Internal Affairs Bureau of the DPD—come to give me grief about the Representative’s snotty kid, I want him fucking gone.

I smack the bag one last time then cross the room to him, my strides certain and fast, demanding he back up.

He doesn’t, his stance saying he’s in charge, his eyes hooded.

My pussy creams.

Shit. Stop it. He’s not a date. He’s…

Fuck if I know, but I intend to find out. “Who are you? If you have business here, do it. If not, leave the premises. Quit leering at me.”

Rather than obey, he drags his gaze down my length far slower than he did earlier.

My heart races in a good way when it shouldn’t. Not one to back down or accept behavior like his, I step closer.

His heat and crisp woodsy scent surround me.

Unwelcome desire surges within my sheath, a faint pulse beating there. Fighting it, I tighten my shoulders. “Didn’t you hear me?”

Every word, Ms. Blosky.”

He knows my name? How? “Are you with IAB? If you are, I have nothing to say to you.”

Then it’s good I’m not with them.”

That doesn’t make sense. There’s no other way he could know my name. No one has to sign in here to use the equipment or be a member. You pay for your time up front then go your own way. We’re all anonymous, which is how I like it. “Then who are you with?”

He shifts his attention from my mouth to my eyes.

His are the deepest blue I’ve ever seen. A sapphire color with faint grey specks. Simply breathtaking. My mouth dries.

The FBI,” he says.

I don’t understand and shake my head. “What about the FBI?”

I’m a Special Agent with the Bureau.”

Yet he’s here and ogling me? I don’t believe him for a second. “What’s your name? Where’s your badge?”

Adrian Kalin,” he says then slips his hand inside his jacket.

The edge falls back, revealing his weapon.

Rather than murder Toni, Michael intends to romance her. Once he convinces her to keep quiet about the Senator, she won’t be a target any longer and Dimitri will back off on the hit. The plan falls apart and now they are dodging mafia enforcers, bullets, and Dimitri’s outrage.

Michael and Toni fight to stay alive and save those dearest to them as they also fall hopelessly in love.

This is book one in the Valesky Crime Family series and has an HEA.

Publisher’s Note: This contemporary dark mafia romance contains elements of mystery, suspense, action, adventure, adult themes, and possible triggers for some readers.

Once outside the capitol, my phone buzzes. The display shows my mother’s picture and name. Worried, I answer. “Mama, are you all right?”

It’s me,” Dimitri says.

I squeeze the phone, wishing it were his throat. If Mama hadn’t married him… If she hadn’t been desperate about feeding and housing her boys when we were little…

Too late now for regrets. The SOB’s tentacles surround each of us. Unless, or until, I kill him, nothing will change. Before I speak, I make certain to mask my disgust. If I piss him off, he’ll take out his rage on my mother, his nearest and weakest target. “He’s voting your way. This time, he won’t change his mind.”

Khorosho.” Russian for good. “I knew you’d come through for me, Mikhail.”

Only because he has the proverbial gun to my head. There isn’t one thing I don’t detest about Dimitri, including his guttural voice. Despite having lived in the States since he was fifteen, he still has a thick accent.

Wanting to end this as quickly as possible, I lie. “I have another appointment. When I’m through with it, I’ll send you details of what Cyrus and I discussed.”

That’s not why I’m calling.”

Despite the warmish spring weather, my skin goes clammy. “Is Mama all—”

She’s fine, and will stay that way, as long you do what you’re told.”

I long to call him every vile thing imaginable but keep my tongue. Something I learned as a kid. His beatings were always worse if I cried or cursed him. If I was silent, that enraged him further, but he wore himself out faster. A win for me.

He clears his throat, but still coughs, thanks to his three-pack a day cigarette habit. Innocent kids get cancer, but not him. What a screwed-up world.

I have another project for you, Mikhail.”

Damn. “What bill is it this time?”

Not a bill. A woman. Toni Flores.”

I’m crossing the street when he says the name. My step pauses. Someone from behind bumps into me.

She’s causing trouble,” Dimitri says. “You need to get rid of her.”

What?”

A different person bumps into me. I cross to the other side. “What are you talking about?”

She’s causing problems for Stowe.”

Lucian Stowe is another senator Dimitri owns. “What kind of problems?”

She’s been claiming to the police and anyone else she can that he sexually assaulted her. It’s not true, but she won’t stop lying about it and she never shuts her mouth.”

I hurry down the street to a less crowded area. “How do you know she’s lying?”

Because I said so!”

In Dimitri’s world that makes perfect sense. “That’s no damn proof.”

Even if she is telling the truth, it doesn’t matter!” He’s shouting louder than I did. “I need Stowe in my pocket! She has to be eliminated! I want you to do it.”

My stomach falls. “No. I don’t do that kind of work. Ever. Especially to a woman who’s—”

I don’t care what she is or how you found out about her. I want it done. No arguments.”

Before I can speak, he ends the call.

She’s flown a single-engine airplane (freaking scary), rewired an old house using an ‘electricity for dummies’ book, and is horribly shy despite the hot romances she writes.
