Dear Riley Rose Book Blitz #rabtbooktours

Memoir

I’d like to tell you a story. It’s a fairy tale of sorts…

At the age of twenty-seven, Caroline Rose was finishing her first year of medical school and in the best shape of her life when she was shockingly diagnosed with a highly aggressive, incurable, stage IV cancer.

At the age of one, Riley, a Great Dane/Labrador mix, was rescued from inhumane abuse. An Internet search of rescue dogs during Caroline’s first remission led her to a picture a large broken dog with empty eyes that resembled her own. One impulsive decision later, Riley became a Rose.

This is the story of two lost souls coming together as one and their journey together through family, love, loss, pain, and hope.

Dear Riley Rose radiates the humor of Riley’s antics during even the toughest of times and illustrates the courage it takes for every being to rise up and choose life in the face of adversity.

Love heals us. Hope carries us. But is that enough for us to believe in a happy ending?

About the Author

Caroline Rose, a nationally recognized author, public speaker, and motivational storyteller, delivers compelling stories from her three separate battles with her highly aggressive, incurable stage IV cancer. After being diagnosed when she was 27 years old and undergoing two different bone marrow transplants, it was ultimately a groundbreaking clinical trial and the donation of her older brother’s marrow that saved her life. Caroline understands the universal struggles of trying to live life to the fullest, even in the face of fear and uncertainty, and is passionate about helping people recognize the beauty of life, even in the darkest moments.

Caroline’s compelling story has been featured by organizations such as MD Anderson Cancer Center, Livestrong, City of Hope National Medical Center, and Health Magazine. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society chose Caroline to be a candidate for their Woman of the Year campaign, and the National Cancer Survivors Day committee highlighted Caroline and her story as a featured speaker for this year’s speaker selection. Caroline is a frequent podcast guest on top rated podcast and travels the country, speaking to approximately 10,000 to 15,000 people annually. In 2018, Caroline was honored to be chosen as the speaker for the City of Hope Music, Film, and Entertainment Industry Spirit of Life Awards in Santa Monica, California.

Today, Caroline is embracing her thirteenth year of living cancer-free. She lives in San Antonio, Texas, and enjoys life as a wife and a mom to her two teenage children and two four-legged fur babies. Caroline is an avid dog lover and a deep believer in the healing power of animals. She is very excited about her soon-to-be-released memoir, Dear Riley Rose, the story of a woman and her dog…and how they saved each other.

In her free time, Caroline volunteers for organizations such as her local dog rescue, the MD Anderson Patient Advisory Board, the Be the Match Foundation, the National Charity League, and the Battle of Flowers Organization, and she fills several parent volunteer positions at her children’s school. Caroline also spends time in Austin and is involved with the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians and the local Austin-based medical device company, Wenzel Spine, which was founded by her life-saving brother, Chad Neely.

Caroline’s strong message of hope, even in the face of profound struggle, resonates universally, especially today. The world is craving hope, and Caroline is happy to be the one to provide it.

EXCERPT

Science is a critical element of how I explain things. As a physician, science is how I heal. Sometimes people describe miracles that  they don’t understand, but as a physician, there is a logical medical  explanation. I advocate for people to use modern medicine in their healing. I  am not just a physician, I am also a patient.

At 43, during the summer of 2022, I received the distressing news that I  had again developed head and neck cancer. I went through it in 2017.  Surprisingly, this was not a recurrence of my previous cancer but a completely  new one on the opposite side. It is an exceptionally rare occurrence,  happening only to about one in every 2,000-3,000 individuals. Unfortunately,  luck was not on my side this time. My daughter witnessed the unsettling sight  of her father undergoing surgery, resulting in matching scars on both sides of  my neck, five years apart. Surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, enduring pain,  and significant weight loss consumed our summer. Our eagerly anticipated  summer bucket list, which we create every year, had to be put on hold. The  many conversations about life I had envisioned having with my daughter now  hang in uncertainty. The amount of time we have left to spend together on this  Earth is unclear. Little did I realize that this seemingly unbearable situation  would transform into the most profound blessing of my life.

I completed surgery in mid-July; technically, my surgeon completed  the surgery. I just took a long nap. Typical man, sleeping on the job while a  talented woman does the work! My surgeon is kind, intelligent and skilled. I  recommend her to anyone. She’s so skilled I am helping her pay off her med  school loans, one surgery at a time, every few years. She is going to need to  name an exam room after me!

The surgery or nap was a tough one to wake up from, a lot of hurting but  also a lot of healing. The kind nurse would give me pain meds to help and heal me with empathy and kindness. We talked about families. She pulled up a song  I asked her to. It comforted me, Peace Be Still by Hope Darst(2). It reminded me  of that day in the pool with my infant daughter. “I don’t want to be afraid every  time I face the waves.” I was hurting, but the voice sang, “I’m not going to be  afraid, Cause these waves are only waves, Peace be still, Say the words and I  will.” Years ago, I was trying to help my daughter be calm and understand she  should face those waves when she went under the water. I wanted her to hear  my voice and be calm. Now I was the scared child, being told I could face these  waves. Just to be still. As I lay in pain, that song and conversation about life  had as much to do with easing my pain as the pain meds.

Ten nights later, the most powerful healing in my life would occur.

After experiencing a miracle during his second cancer journey, Neal felt compelled to share his insights on healing. His debut book David Walking With Grace is a candid and refreshingly humorous account of his journey of recovery, science, and faith. He gives readers insight into all dimensions of “healing,” including the physical, spiritual, emotional, and social aspects. He writes through the lens of physician, patient, and parent. He prioritizes raising his daughter. She is a major inspiration for his writing. Neal hopes she leaves the world a little better than she found it. Being born during a total eclipse of the sun added a touch of cosmic wonder to his life. His genetic heart condition adds a reminder of our mortality. Neal has worked at multiple top hospitals and renowned healthcare systems. Neal enjoys spending time with his family and friends. With a wide range of interests, his favorite aspect of his hobbies is getting to know people and their personal stories. Through the Storm Book Blitz #rabtbooktours

Nonfiction / Journal / Cancer

A breast cancer journal. I really wanted the journal to be full of life and colourful. The illustrations made it come to life, I find them so inspiring and I hope you do as well!

This book has been a genuine labor of love. It is full of purpose and hope. Everything you see is my vision come true. Cancer threatens everything you believed to be true, I had my chemo-port removed and flew to Atlanta later that day, on the flight back, I believe it was a 6AM flight, all I wanted to do was sleep for the 2 hour flight.  Instead, this idea for a bookmark started forming in my head. I figured lots of people read in waiting rooms and chemo suites etc., so it made sense to create bookmarks with little quips to lift the spirit during these waits. Well, the ideas were flowing so fast that I couldn’t write fast enough and I had no paper, so I wrote on the plane barf bag (I still have it). It became apparent I had a lot more to say than a bookmark could hold. I still plan to make bookmarks some day soon.

I have included prompts for questions to ask. Symptom trackers to report to providers. Daily prompts to do something intentionally kind and uplifting in small bites because some days are really tough and it becomes difficult to remember the amazing person you were prior to a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. I am truly proud of it. There is a prayer/meditation script written by one of my dearest friends who chose words that can resonate with anyone regardless of faith or the absence thereof and in any tough life situation. There is a feature to track daily water intake and so much more.
