Cowboy Up Teaser Tuesday #rabtbooktours

Cowboy Romance, Age Gap, Suspense

Date Published: April 26, 2024

Mia – I ran away from home when I was seventeen and attached myself to a too-old-for-me cowboy. Then he knocked me up, slapped me around, and left me. My baby and I would have had nowhere to go, but the sweetest cowboy I’ve ever met threw me a lifeline. It was only supposed to be a marriage of convenience. I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with him. When life keeps throwing us one obstacle after another, I have to wonder if I made the right choice. What if I’m ruining Jackson’s life?

Jackson – I have really big shoes to fill. Not only is my dad a retired rodeo national champion, but he’s also part of the Dixie Reapers MC. He saved my mom, and he’s been my hero ever since I was a kid. So when my friend starts yelling at his girlfriend and slaps her around, I know I have to step in. Now I have a family I didn’t plan for, and I have no idea how to tell my parents. But with trouble following us no matter where we go, there’s only one place I can turn – to the Dixie Reapers – because I’ll do whatever it takes to keep my family safe.

EXCERPT

Carter’s face twisted into a snarl, his grip on the beer in his hand tightening until I feared the bottle might shatter. I should have known things would turn out this way. Although, I’d never seen him act like this with a woman before. I remained tense and ready to intervene the moment I thought he was going too far.

How many beers had he had? Five? Six? He looked completely plastered. I was thankful I’d decided to come to this rodeo. At first, I’d thought to pass and go to a different event, but when I found out Carter was heading here, something told me to follow.

Why the fuck was he doing this right by the arena? I could barely focus on my upcoming ride. A quick glance showed I needed to get moving if I wanted to make this ride count.

“You stupid little whore,” he spat, his words laced with venom and rage that made my blood run cold. “You think I’m gonna stick around and play daddy to some brat? You’re out of your Goddamn mind!”

Mia recoiled, her eyes wide with terror. Shit! If he took a swing at her, I’d have to forget my damn ride and go help her. Hold on just a bit longer.

“Jackson, it’s now or never,” said one of the cowboys waiting for me. I pulled my attention away from Carter and Mia, hoping I wasn’t making a mistake. I knew I’d ride like shit if I sat here worrying about her.

Closing my eyes, I cleared my mind, blocked out all the noise around me, adjusted my grip and gave the cowboy a nod. He opened the chute and the bronc beneath me bolted in a straight line. Bastard didn’t start bucking until we’d reached the other end of the arena. If I got a shitty score for drawing this horse, I was going to be pissed.

The horse’s hooves would pound into the dirt, then he’d go airborne again. He did his best to scrape me off on the arena fencing when he couldn’t seem to throw me. Sweat dripped into my eyes and I held on, hoping for a high enough score to at least keep my place. I was gunning for nationals and needed every point.

As the buzzer sounded, I jumped off the bronco. The moment my feet hit the arena floor, I took off for the fence. My body still hummed with energy from the ride, every muscle tense. I cleared the fence and closed the distance.

I’d never seen my friend act like this before, and it sickened me.

“Please, Carter,” she begged. “I didn’t want this to happen either, but we have to do something.”

“Then get rid of it!” he bellowed, causing heads to turn in their direction. “I don’t give a damn how, just make sure it’s gone!”

The bond between us as friends had shattered in an instant, and I couldn’t let Carter hurt Mia any further.

“Hey!” I shouted, my voice firm and commanding. “Leave her alone, Carter!”

He whipped around to face me, his eyes blazing with fury, and for a moment I saw the man I’d once considered a brother. But that fleeting glimpse disappeared as quickly as it had come, replaced by the monster he’d become. I’d like to hope it was only the alcohol, but I worried I might be seeing his true self for the first time.

“Stay out of this, Jackson!” he snarled, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. “This ain’t your business!”

“Like hell it isn’t,” I shot back, my heart pounding in my chest as I positioned myself between him and Mia. “You don’t get to treat her like this, not while I’m still breathing.”

My words hung heavy in the air between us, a testament to the line we’d crossed and the friendship we’d just left behind. We stood there, two men who’d once been closer than brothers, now locked in a battle neither of us could back down from. I’d never let him, or any man, hurt a woman. Not in my presence. I’d been raised to take care of those weaker than me, and Mia definitely qualified.

“Get the hell away from her, Carter!” I demanded, my voice unwavering. She trembled behind me. I heard her suck in a breath and sniffle, which meant she was most likely crying. I felt her shaky hands press against my back.

“Who the hell do you think you are?” Carter seethed, his bloodshot eyes filled with rage. He threw his beer to the ground, the glass shattering against the dirt, and clenched his fists.

“Someone who won’t stand by and watch you hurt a woman,” I replied, my pulse racing, knowing the situation was spiraling out of control.

“Stay out of it, Jackson!” Carter spat, his face contorted into a snarl. “I told you this ain’t your business!”

I shook my head, refusing to back down. “It became my business when you laid a hand on her. Or are you trying to tell me one side of her face is redder than the other for a reason besides you hitting her?”

Carter’s nostrils flared, the alcohol and anger fueling him like a wildfire. He lunged at me, swinging a wild punch aimed straight for my face. I could feel the heat of his fist as it narrowly missed me, my instincts and years of rodeo reflexes kicking in as I expertly dodged the blow.

“Is this how you want to handle things, Carter?” I asked, my heart pounding even faster now, adrenaline coursing through my veins. But before he could answer, I retaliated with a powerful punch of my own, connecting with his jaw.

“Son of a bitch!” he cursed, stumbling back a few steps, clearly stunned by the force of my blow.

“Leave her alone or I swear, I won’t hesitate to knock some sense into you,” I warned, my eyes locked onto his, showing him I meant every word.

He glared at me, his face reddening with humiliation and fury, but he didn’t make another move. His hands fisted at his sides, and I wondered if he was going to take another swing at me. The sweat dripped off my brow as I stared into Carter’s rage-filled eyes, preparing for his next move. I couldn’t afford to let my guard down -- not with Mia’s safety on the line.

“Is that all you got?” Carter snarled, wiping blood from his mouth.

“Leave her alone, Carter,” I warned, my chest heaving with the effort it took to keep my emotions in check. “This ends now.”

“Over my dead body,” he spat back, throwing another punch. But I was ready. With practiced ease, I sidestepped his attack and landed a decisive uppercut to his jaw.

He came after me again, but in his drunken state, he was no match for me. As much as I hated to hurt the man who’d once been my friend, I landed blow after blow to his ribs, gut, and face. If he’d backed down, I’d have let him go. He charged me again. I slammed my fist into his cheek.

Carter’s body crumpled to the ground like a rag doll, the fight finally drained out of him. Silence fell over the rodeo arena as everyone held their breath, waiting to see what would happen next. Shit! I hadn’t even realized everyone was watching us. Didn’t surprise me no one was stepping forward. They all wanted to watch the drama unfold, but no one wanted to take responsibility for whatever happened.

He groaned and struggled to get to his knees.

“Stay away from her, Carter,” I warned.

“Think you can tell me what to do?” he spat, his voice slurred with alcohol.

“About Mia? Yeah, I do,” I replied. “Someone needs to protect her from you. When did you become such a mean drunk?”

“Who are you to decide what’s best for her?” Carter sneered, wiping the blood from his lip as he advanced.

“Someone who won’t lay a hand on her in anger.” The alcohol had completely pickled his brain. “Go sleep it off, Carter.”

He staggered to his feet and disappeared into the crowd. I had a feeling he’d come for her again. Maybe not today, but sometime in the future. I trusted my gut, and it was telling me Mia was still in danger.

“Jackson, please,” Mia whispered, her hand on my arm. Suddenly, the noise of the surrounding chaos seemed to fade away, and all I could hear was her voice, her fear and vulnerability plain for me to see. In that moment, I realized this wasn’t just about teaching Carter a lesson. It was about showing Mia she had someone in her corner, someone who would protect her no matter what.

“Okay,” I said. “It’s over.”

I took her hand in mine, leading her away from the crowd. I might not know a lot about pregnant women, but the stress couldn’t be good for her or the baby. She needed somewhere quiet, and we both needed time to think.

“Where are we going?” Mia asked, her eyes still brimming with fear.

“Somewhere safe,” I assured her. “Away from all this. Just trust me, okay?”

“Okay,” she agreed, her voice barely more than a whisper.

I could feel her body trembling as we moved through the sea of people, and I wished more than anything that I could take away her pain. But for now, all I could do was guide her toward safety, one step at a time.

“Almost there,” I murmured, my eyes scanning the area for any sign of danger. “Just keep holding on.”

Charming the Billionaire Cowboy

Who wouldn’t want to be a billionaire? Turns out winning the lottery causes as many problems as it solves.

For the first time, his cowboy charm seems to backfire…

With his Texas ranching family’s lottery win, TC Tomlinson is finally able to build a ranch with alternative livestock. TC has a lot to prove, starting with his new ostrich herd, so when he catches a beauty scooping up an escaped baby bird, TC chases her down, assuming she wants to meet him for his money.

When Hallie Armstrong sees the injured baby ostrich, she jumps into professional mode. A former vet tech, she’s moved to Last Stand to work at her aunt’s wildlife rescue and heal from an attack. She’s skittish of the handsome cowboy, but when he starts to flirt, she decides two can play at this game—the rescue needs fundraising, and TC is an eligible bachelor.

As they brainstorm ideas for a bachelor auction and work to solve the mystery of local sheep attacks, TC finds himself falling for the feisty cowgirl. But when he learns she’s still in danger, his protective instincts threaten to drive the independent Hallie away. Can TC convince Hallie she can have her independence and him too?

Praise for Charming the Billionaire Cowboy

I loved watching them make the slide from tentative friendship into something more, especially given Hallie’s hesitation in trusting any man. Now TC can be stubborn, he isn’t afraid to toss money at a problem, but he’s also compassionate and falling so deeply for Hallie that it’s a joy to watch. I’m enjoying this series so much.” - Happily Ever After Romance

A charming story of a cute couple destined for love.” – Paula on BookBub

I loved seeing TC and Hallie building a relationship of friendship that leads to more. There are lots of animals to enjoy along the way. Family is important, animals are important, and safety is important in this heartwarming story. I highly recommend this series and especially Charming the Billionaire Cowboy. You will be charmed too.” – Pwall on BookBub

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Hallie drove down the country road between green fields. Nothing looked familiar. Was that because she was lost or because her memory was faulty? She pulled to the side of the road, got out of the car, and looked around. A sudden rustling came from the ditch beside the road. Then an odd trilling noise filled the air. A bird or frog? But the rustling sounded like a large animal.

Hallie headed for the ditch, prepared to race back and dive inside the car if she needed to escape danger.

She stared down at a fluffy ball that rustled the grasses as it moved. It looked like a giant feather duster had come to life. A tiny head bobbed on a long neck. A beak opened and chirped. What was that thing? Some kind of bird, judging by the beak. A large bird, with a body the size of a basketball.

She looked around. No one in sight. So this wasn’t a bizarre prank. She was pretty sure she wasn’t dreaming, since she had the presence of mind to wonder if she was dreaming. Her memory might be shaky, but it had yet to give her hallucinations.

She crouched for a closer look. The animal chirped and tried to get up, but it quickly pitched forward, flapping short wings. It must be caught or injured somehow. She could do something about that. Many animals calmed down if you covered their eyes. That made it easier to handle them. She didn’t have a towel in the car, and on this warm spring day, she hadn’t brought a jacket. Oh well. Hallie peeled off her long-sleeved T-shirt, leaving her in a sturdy sports bra in cheerful purple and turquoise.

Hallie duckwalked into the ditch and tossed her shirt over the creature. She knelt beside the bird and wrapped her shirt around its head, loosely tucking the long sleeves around the neck a few times to hold the shirt in place.

The animal gave a few last pathetic peeps and settled down. She put her arm around its body. The gray-brown feathers were downy, silky against her bare skin, so it must be young. She gently straightened at the waist, still on her knees, revealing the bird’s long legs with knobby knees and two large toes on each foot. It might be young, but it would stand about three feet high. An ostrich? She recalled hearing about an ostrich farm around here.

Well, they apparently weren’t very attentive ostrich farmers, because this little critter had escaped and was far from the herd or flock or whatever ostriches had. It also had a gash on its leg, shallow but long, still oozing blood.

Okay, let’s get you help.” She rose to her feet with a grunt. The bird must weigh fifty pounds.

She got the squirming bird in the car, dodging its bobbing head. As she shifted toward the driver’s side door, she glanced down the road. An oversized red pickup truck was coming up fast. Hallie hadn’t noticed the truck approaching, and now it was within fifty feet. She slid into the car, yanked the door shut, and turned the ignition.

That truck was almost on top of her. She’d wait for it to pass.

She glared as the shiny red truck pulled past. It was enormous, so apparently somebody felt the need to compensate for something.

The truck swung across the road and stopped in front of her. A door slammed. A tall, lanky cowboy strode around the front of the truck, scowling.

Hallie gave a squeak worthy of the baby ostrich and hit the automatic door lock.

The man stormed up to her door. He had to lean way over to peer in at her. “What do you think you’re doing?” he demanded.

Hallie gaped at him. How was she supposed to answer that? She thought she was minding her own business.

He rapped on the window. No way was she going to roll it down.

Hallie put the car in reverse. He was blocking the road ahead, so she’d go back the way she came.

He tried her door handle. Thank goodness she’d locked it.

He knocked on the window again, his fierce face a foot away. “Open up!”

Hallie shook her head vigorously. She eased off the brakes so the car started rolling backward.

He skipped back from the car. Hallie let out a shaky breath and touched the gas. She couldn’t go too fast in reverse, though, or she might back into the ditch. Then she’d really be in trouble.

The angry cowboy ran after her, shouting something.

It took a moment for his words to penetrate.

Give me back my ostrich!”

Whoops.

Jules and Peppermint were at Mitchel’s ranch thirty minutes later. Jules parked their rental car on the road, in complete awe of what stood before her.

The scene looked like something out of Little House on the Prairie.

Acres of luminous, rich land that ran for miles over the hill. Amid this living portrait sat a two-story, off-white house made of shingles with a black roof. An elegant pavilion brought a sophisticated Southern charm to the place. Two hammocks, a patio table and a vibrant display of flowers highlighted the architectural centrepiece.

Peppermint knocked on the front door, but no one answered. But the black Ford truck suggested Mitchel was around somewhere.

“Over there!” A forceful, masculine voice shouted through the breeze. “There, Annie! Get in line, Buck!”

“What in the world?” Jules headed off in the direction of the screams. The air overflowed with the overlapping sounds of cows mooing and horses neighing.

Jules hadn’t been on a farm or ranch in her life, nor had she wanted to be. She was a city girl through and through. She didn’t even like to go outside, let alone camp, or even be anywhere near animals. The only cow she wanted to see was on her plate.

“Where are we going?” Peppermint huffed and puffed, struggling to walk her little roly-poly body up the hill.

Jules had expected the ranch to smell like shit and she kept checking her shoes to make sure she hadn’t walked in any cow pies. But the ranch didn’t stink at all. She couldn’t get enough of the sweet yet slightly pungent perfume coming from the mouth-watering red apples hanging from the trees.

“Ah.” Jules stood on top of the hill and, when she saw him, immediately wobbled, falling backward.

“Whoa.” Peppermint caught her. “Are you okay?”

Peppermint’s words didn’t register. Jules heard nothing and saw nothing except this Adonis who sat on his horse, herding the wandering cattle.

“Over there!” He nudged a cow with his horse’s nose and the cow got back in line. “Line, line!”

“That’s him.” Peppermint huffed and puffed, sweating. “I told you he was perfect.”

Mitchel took his cowboy hat off and glanced in Jules’ direction, but not long enough to notice her. He was everything Peppermint said and more. Hell, he was even more attractive than Jules imagined.

She started sweating, but not from the sun. Her stomach flip-flopped like it did the first time a boy kissed her and her toes curled just at the sound of his voice.

Ranching did a body great because there were fitness trainers that had nothing on this man. By the length of his legs, he was at least 6’4”. He controlled his horse with strong, sturdy arms. Under his white tank top, Jules saw he had just the right amount of muscles. She didn’t like a really bulky man, but he had to be fit. And Mitchel well, he was all that and then some.

He tapped the horse with his boots and he could probably smash bricks with those thick, toned thighs. Hands so big they could grab Jules’ entire ass with one scoop.

“Jules?” Peppermint nudged her. “Jules!”

“W what?” She swallowed. “Oh, uh. My God. He’s he’s the most handsome man I’ve ever seen.”

“I told you he was hot.”

“Hot is an understatement.” Jules felt like someone had knocked the wind out of her.

“Dan’s gonna love him when he sees him. He’s an instant star, right?”

Jules swallowed. “I wanna have his baby.”

“Jules, Jesus.” Peppermint laughed.

“I gotta get a video.” Jules took out her phone and recorded him. “Dan needs to see this for himself. Look at him.” Her heart jumped. “It’s so sexy how he’s so in control. Look at how the cows follow him.”

“Shit, as good as he looks, I’d be following his ass too.” Peppermint snickered.

“Fuck.” Jules slanted her phone, her nipples begging to be sucked. “He is oh, he’s something.”

“Miss Atlas?”

“Ah!” Jules turned to see a shapely redheaded woman who looked to be in her early to mid-twenties wearing cut-off denim shorts and a shirt that stopped at her midriff.

The Daisy Dukes wannabe grinned, raising the brim of her cowboy hat so they could see her emerald eyes. “Sorry if I scared you.” She chewed gum. “I’m Melanie. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Atlas.”

Jules nodded. “You know who I am?”

“Who doesn’t? You’re the most exciting thing to happen to this town in ages. What are you doing here? Did Mitch know you were coming?”

“No, but I really need to speak to him.” Jules put her phone up. “Think he can spare a few minutes?”

“Let’s find out.” Melanie yelled into her hands, “Mitch, you got visitors!”

“Whoa.” He stopped his horse and looked over at Jules.

“Hello!” She waved.

But instead of him smiling or showing any excitement, he rolled his eyes. “I’ll be inside in a minute!”

“Come on.” Melanie started down the hill. “I’ll let you in the house.”

****

Twenty minutes later, Mitchel Scott, the God himself, stood against the porcelain mantel in his living room, glaring at Peppermint and Jules as he loudly sipped from his glass of fresh lemonade. “You can’t be serious.”

“We are.” Jules cleared her throat, the cool glass of lemonade freezing her fingers. “You’re a star and I know stars.”

“Oh, yeah?” He wiggled his eyebrows. “Somehow I’m not convinced.”

Jules was so glad he’d taken that cowboy hat off because all it did was impede his beauty. With short, shaggy caramel-blond hair he had a rugged swagger that told you he didn’t give a damn what you thought.

His icy lavender-brown eyes and intense eyebrows matched his sensational features, a five o’clock shadow speckled across his hollow cheeks.

Jules tried to keep it together, but it was the toughest feat of her life. She never wanted a man so much. Some people were so attractive you wondered if they knew how good-looking they were. But with the way Mitchel Scott carried himself, you best believe he knew he was the shit, and he made sure everyone else knew it too.

Jules mentioned the shows she’d worked on and how many normal people were now household names because of them.

He shrugged, sipping. “I haven’t heard of those shows. I don’t watch TV.”

“Come on.” Peppermint grinned. “Who doesn’t watch TV in this day and age?”

“Me. I haven’t watched TV since I was a teenager.”

“Well, what do you do in your spare time?” Jules asked.

“Lady, I don’t have spare time. My time goes to running this ranch and if you haven’t noticed, it’s a twenty-four-hour thing.” He finished his lemonade and slammed the glass on the mantel. “Which reminds me I gotta get back to work so if you’ll excuse me

“Wait.” Jules jumped up in front of him. “I know this seems strange and you claim you aren’t interested but—”

“I’m not interested.” He got his hat off the table and put it on. “No offense but I want nothing to do with you or your show. Now excuse me.”

Peppermint blocked him. “I don’t think you understand how big of an opportunity this is, Mr. Scott. You could be famous. You have the looks, the body, the tough-as-nails persona women love and you’re a real-life cowboy! The women will drool so badly they’ll need paddles to get off their couch after the show is over.”

“I see. So you think I’m just some mindless beefcake you’re gonna use to get you ratings, huh?”

“No.” Jules stepped in front of Peppermint. “You are more than a pretty face and you can showcase that on the show. Besides, aren’t you single? Believe it or not, many people have found their true loves on dating shows.”

He rolled his eyes.

“It’s all about the women,” Jules said. “Women drive ratings for reality shows. At least audition. Will you do that?”

“I guess your line of work depends on you being persuasive, Miss Atlas?” He scrunched his forehead. “But honestly, it’s just getting on my nerves.”

“Hey, you don’t have to be rude,” Peppermint said.

“Everyone else in this town is fawning all over you guys but not me.” He pointed to himself. “I’m not impressed by either of you and I want nothing to do with that show. This is a town built on hard work and pride and I don’t appreciate you trying to turn it into some mockery.”

“We’re not trying to do that—”

“But that’s what’s happening,” he interrupted Jules. “Since you got here, the whole town’s going crazy to be on this show. They’re acting like animals in a circus but what happens to them once it’s all over? Do you even care?”

“Course I care.” Jules stomped her feet. “But this is business.”

“To you this is business.” He pointed at her. “To me it’s my home. You make these shows where you tear someone’s world upside down, leave them damaged, then move onto another show.”

Jules groaned. “For someone who doesn’t watch TV you sure have a deep opinion on reality shows.”

“I have the Internet so you can’t escape it. Plus my aunt’s obsessed with that junk.”

Jules squeezed her hands into fists, trying to keep her temper in check. “That junk has millions of fans and you insult them when you judge every reality show the same. Yes, some are junk but not all. Some are educational and valuable.”

He laughed.

“Laugh all you want but those people on those shows make a lot of money,” Peppermint said. “And no one forces them to be on them. Many are thankful for the opportunity.”

“Well, not me. I don’t want to audition for your show, I don’t want you guys in this town and I don’t want you coming to my ranch again. You got me?” He shoved them with his shoulders as he walked past.

Jules whipped around. “You’re a fool. This is the opportunity of a lifetime. Do you realize the money you could make? Don’t you wanna be rich and have more to look forward to than this ranch?”

“Get outta my house.” He tipped his hat over his eyes and stomped out the door.

Jules pointed to the door, looking at Peppermint. “You need an extra asshole because there’s one.”

“God.” Peppermint shook her head. “So much for being perfect. That man is the biggest jerk I’ve ever met. Should’ve known something was wrong with him. But damn he’s fine.”

Jules rocked, rubbing her chin. “Asshole or not he’s the ticket to making this show a hit and my ticket to scouting for feature films one day soon. Oh, no.” She chuckled. “Mitchel Scott hasn’t seen the last of me.”

They exited the house.

“But we only have a few weeks here.” Peppermint followed Jules down the porch steps. “I don’t think you’re gonna change his mind in that little time.”

As they walked to the car, Jules cast a look at Mitchel as he sorted through hay with gloved hands. He looked up at her, scoffed and continued working.

“He thinks he’s had the last word.” Jules got into the car. “But I can be very persuasive when I wanna be.” She smirked at Peppermint as she started the car. “When I get through with him, he’ll be begging to be on the show.”
