PROLOGUE

An hour ago, I was almost burned to death. My life was saved by something supernatural, something not from this world. Call it what you will. A ghost, a spirit, a presence.

The events I now chronicle were the real thing. They happened to me at Sebastian Castle, the mansion of the famed illusionist, Nicholas Sebastian.

Thomas Veil stopped typing and stared at his computer screen. The smell of smoke and ash still lingered in his hair and clothes as he edited the article. He had changed the working title three times in the last five minutes:

Life After Death?

The Mystery of Faith

Do You Believe in Ghosts?

Nicholas Sebastian: A Modern Horror Story

                    by Thomas Veil

Features Editor, The Los Angeles Mirror

A darkness stirred within Veil that he could not comprehend. The hair on the back of his hands prickled upward as he typed: “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.”(H.P. Lovecraft) If that is true, I can assure you of one thing. Spiritual forces exist. I have no doubt about that now. Evil is something real. Over the past three days, I became part of an obscene horror story. How easy it was to be drawn in.

But this story’s origins began twenty years ago—with one man’s obsession with his wife, and life beyond the grave.

Veil stopped writing.

His mind sprinted in circles as his right hand trembled with exhaustion. He knew there would be no sleep for him tonight.

When the thrumming wind blew an overhanging tree branch against the roof, Veil flinched. The muscles in his throat tightened. It was still there: the fear seeped in. Ghastly images rose, emotion overtaking reason, filling Veil’s mouth with a bitter taste like a copper penny. The image of her face was cemented in the shadow of his mind: black galaxies of eyes shot with red.

In that moment, he declined his head and felt a shiver plaiting up his back.

Somehow Thomas Veil sensed that someone loomed behind him, even before the hand fell on his shoulder.

Ornery Owl's Review

Five out of Five Stars

I was expecting a schlocky, over-the-top thriller, which is what a Blumhouse film normally delivers. Instead, I received a wonderfully suspenseful ghost story that kept me wondering what was happening. Was Aisha suffering from PTSD? Was she showing signs of onset schizophrenia? This engaging story riveted me.

The movie was refreshingly free from the overt gore and jarring jump scares that plague other Blumhouse productions. The intimate scenes were subtle and tasteful rather than being uncomfortable, in-your-face soft-core porn performances. Nanny gets paranormal suspense right. I hope future Blumhouse productions will follow suit.

THE LADIES COTTAGE
New Norfolk, Tasmania 1879

“You’re dirty rotten, Delaney, you witch.” Abbey kicked as hard as she could, but Delaney felt capable of handling her outbursts. She was more robust than Abbey, whose frail body was no match for the hard taskmaster with the nickname Haggus.

“Just ignore her language, Louise. She’ll calm down after the doctor gets here with the morphine. It will knock her out, I hope.”

“You’re a demon, Delaney. Fess up and stop hiding behind that nurse’s uniform, as if you’re the moral light of this cursed place!” Abbey lifted her head and spat toward the nurse, narrowly missing her face with the thick, yellowish mucus that stuck onto her white uniform.

Louise placed her hand over her mouth and nearly chucked. She was an inexperienced nurse, used to the private hospitals in Hobart for dignitaries and the rich. However, she’d had no option but to work at Willow Court Asylum, following her husband’s posting to nearby military barracks.

Abbey continued her rage, holding on to the belly with both hands and pressing slightly in a futile attempt to stop the pain that was ripping through her body. She was eight months pregnant and was giving birth to a pre-mature, illegitimate child. No one knew who the father was, and nobody cared. That was the way it was back then, with a woman caught destitute in an asylum and locked away from the rest of civilization. They turned a blind eye to sexual assaults by staff that were commonplace amongst the patients.

The ghost wore a red-and-blue-checked shirt with suspended loose-fitted corduroy trousers, covered by an oversized sack coat and wavers for shoes—a type of waterproof gumboot. It had a white handkerchief tied around the neck and a broad felt hat. It peered with a skinny, sunken face, white and devoid of any existence. With an elongated nose and red bloodshot eyes—Gazza knew it was not from this world.

Gazza was a panderer, a good-looking guy that liked to mix with beautiful girls—he was not a fighter. And yet, he realized he was going to confront the most significant battle for his life. He stood firm, upright and arms folded—a natural reaction as his defence mechanism kicked into overdrive. But that could not hide his vulnerability as he trembled inside in fear for his life.

He continued flashing his torchlight at the phantasm circling him with prancing eyes, ready for its next move. Whatever happened to Jamie, I’m next, he thought.

The icy cold wind blew a gust across the mining shafts, and the moonlight made way for darkness as the clouds rolled in suffocating any virtue of hope. It was pitch black, and his torchlight was starting to fade slowly as the battery life dwindled. He tapped on his torch to get back the light he so desperately needed, but it was only temporary. The phantom continued circling and stomping on the hallowed turf, peering at him with penetrating eyes—ready to make its move. His phone torchlight was his next best thing, but that power source was also dwindling.

The phantom lifted a gold miner’s pickaxe and raised it into the air as a glitter of light reflected off the tips of the sharp end. Gazza instinctively covered his face by raising his right arm. The phantom came for him, and with an almighty swoop, the pickaxe fell on Gazza. He screamed for help, just like Jamie did—but no one was there to hear his final plight to the world. Had the demon murdered Gazza or taken him, prisoner?
