A Horror From the Deep

In his wildest nightmares, the fisherman could never have imagined the horror he dragged aboard his boat from the Gloomwater Sea. He'd heard tales of this monstrosity but had never imagined seeing one. The Abyssal Leviathan spanned nearly ten feet, its oily, swollen body undulating from side to side on the deck of the Nautical Requiem. Its skin was a mottled blend of moldy blues and sickly greens covered in parasitic barnacles.

The creature had a broad, flattened head, a mouth filled with rows of jagged, razor-sharp teeth, and bulbous eyes that reflected a bioluminescent glow, mesmerizing and horrifying. A milky white eye remained stationary, while a brilliant crimson eye darted about, observing its surroundings with suspicion and rage.

Tentacles lined with venomous barbs oozing a noxious glowing chartreuse secretion sprouted from the beast's head. These appendages writhed like snakes preparing to strike. Its serpentine body tapered into a long, whip-like tail covered in spiny protrusions. Sharp ridges ran down its spine along its dorsal edge, pulsing with an eerie blue glow. The creature emitted a miasmal stench of decay and brine. The fisherman covered the beast with a tarpaulin and lashed it to the mast.

“Really, Marti? Blasting The Ride of the Valkyries while tearing up the Dalling Rise?” Ophrah Pololáník asked, checking her seat belt and looking askance at the driver.

“You know The Ring is my focus music, OP,” Marta Benscoter said. The calmness in her voice belied the intensity in her light hazel eyes. She could have posed for the cover of a business magazine with her perfectly coiffed, collar-length pale blonde hair and her sharp gray suit jacket with the high-end dark-blue t-shirt underneath.

“You look like a mild-mannered fifty-three-year-old interior decorator on the outside, but your devil-may-care behavior suggests a hostile takeover," Ophrah quipped. "Have you been possessed by a Valkyrie?"

“I'm not devil-may-care; I'm just focused,” Marta explained. "I want to get to Arbofil before the storm hits. Those roiling clouds grow closer and darker every time I glance in the rear-view mirror."

“You know best,” Ophrah said, nervously running a hand over her frizzy mahogany hair as if checking to ensure that she’d at least look good when they crashed. “You’re a good driver. It’s just that I’ve always been a slow-cruising kind of gal. I like to take my time and get there in one piece.”

“I’m all for that, but we’re more likely to get there in one piece if we aren’t driving on slick roads.”

Stephanie glanced at the bag in her hands and back up to the cabin’s door. Nibbling her lip, she couldn’t decide if self-confidence or self-sabotage had spurred her to drive to Ted’s house after dark. Whatever motivated her, she was here, readying herself to knock with the lamest excuse possible.

She fisted her hand and raised it to the door, knocking quickly before dropping the heavy appendage to her side to grip the tote bag again. Like a flimsy canvas sack containing an assortment of Maddy’s things—mostly socks and sweatshirts she’d slipped off during the school day—from her car would provide her with protection from embarrassment. She couldn’t stop thinking about the stolen moments they’d spent together. Each had been spontaneous and natural. Tonight, she was forcing an encounter.

The door opened.

“Stephanie? Hi,” he murmured, slipping outside. “I thought I heard a knock at the door but wasn’t sure. What’s up?”

She thrust the bag forward, hitting him square in the chest. “I’ve been collecting Maddy’s lost clothing. I realized just how much I had and figured you’d probably need it. You know. To do her laundry?” Stephanie’s voice was squeaky and awkward. Her skin flushed.

“Oh, right.” He held the bag to his chest. “Thanks. I appreciate it.”

She took a deep breath. She was glad he hadn’t asked why she didn’t just give the items to him tomorrow or let Maddy bring them inside. She’d wanted to see him. But now, once again, her small talk vanished.

On Sunday morning, Liz closed her computer and rubbed her throbbing forehead. Jade had been singing for the last hour. It was like living with freaking Cinderella, the Disney version where she had all the animal friends and was unfailingly cheerful when she should have been enraged by her mistreatment.

But Liz would not go into a rant in her own mind. What was the point of arguing with someone who agreed with you?

Anyway, apparently Jade had a reason for singing. Carl had liked her business proposal. Carl understood that while the local cat rescue was on sound footing, it didn’t have the resources to handle special needs cats. Carl loved cats. Carl, Carl, Carl.

Liz had to smile, seeing her friend so giddy. She just hoped Carl was the sincere and not merely showing enthusiasm because he wanted to impress Jade long enough to get her into bed. If he was playing games, Liz would have to destroy him, and she didn’t have time for that. But he’d seemed nice enough.

Once she’d shaken off her annoyance at the cat-hater and the squealing girl desperately trying to attract him, Liz had watched Jade and Carl with great interest. The chemistry between them had been off the charts. Liz might have envied Jade for that too.

Not that she envied her best friend for anything. She wanted wonderful things for Jade, and Liz didn’t have time for a relationship anyway, or know anyone interesting, so …

Wait, what had she been thinking about?

Jade hit a particularly high note.

Oh, right. Good chemistry.

Liz chuckled and headed to the kitchen to refill her coffee. She was pretty sure she’d already taken the last cup, but if she was lucky, Jade would have started a second pot. She found Jade scrubbing the counters as she sang. Liz scowled at the coffee maker, or more specifically the empty space where the glass pot should be. The dishwasher was running; apparently Jade had decided to wash the coffee pot as part of her enthusiastic cleaning binge. Freaking Cinderella.
