Tor carried the orb in one hand. Its glow had slowly dwindled since he had removed it from the wall sconce, but it still gave enough light for Tor to lead Koji and Borgli along the curved rock corridor connecting the guest house to Vanda’s manor. They emerged just outside the dining room, where Tor placed the orb in another sconce, its light blooming at contact.

He paused in the dining room doorway, surprised by what he saw. Vanda stood before the burning fireplace, and he was not alone. A young woman stood beside him.

Her brown hair spilled over one shoulder, her slightly angular eyes and tanned skin speaking of her as Balmorian. Rather than wearing a dress, the common garb for females, tight, brown breeches clung to her long, lean legs and a green leather vest, cinched at the waist, covered her upper body. Beneath the vest was a cream tunic unlaced to leave her collarbone exposed. A thick black belt and black riding boots completed her ensemble.

The woman’s dark eyes met Tor’s. She frowned as those eyes scanned him from head to toe. “Who is this?”

Tor said, “I was about to ask the same question.”

Vanda turned toward Tor. The sorcerer wore a black doublet trimmed in silver. “Ah. Finally. You are lucky. If I did not have a quest that I needed to discuss with you, dinner would have already begun.” He put a hand on the woman’s shoulder. “I want you to meet Taquell Tarpon. Taquell, this is Tor Ranseur.”

Truly?” She arched a brow. “I expected someone more…impressive.”

Such dismissals irritated Tor. He had heard the same before and the comments only became more frequent as his fame spread. “And I would expect a young woman to show respect toward her elders.”

She snorted. “You expect wrong. Respect is earned, and I’ve seen nothing to show you deserve it.”

Fists tightening, Tor bristled until Koji rested his heavy paw on his shoulder.

Easy, Tor,” Koji said in a soft voice.

The woman looked Koji up and down. “And who is this oversized lunkhead?”

Vanda said, “This is Kojinko Maulo. Like Tor, he is a Murguard veteran and a seasoned adventurer.”

Her gaze shifted to Borgli, who stood at Tor’s other side. “And the walking beard?”

The name is Borgli Handshaw.” Borgli stroked his damp facial hair. “I am flattered that you are impressed with my beard.”

The woman snorted. “If you say so.”

Enough banter.” Vanda clapped his hands, the sound echoing in the chamber. The candelabras on the dining table ignited with flame. “Let us sit, eat, and have a civil discussion.

The wizard claimed the seat at the head of the table, as he always did. Tor sat beside him with Koji on his other side. The woman sat across from Tor, Borgli beside her.

She narrowed her eyes at the dwarf. “Be sure to keep your hands to yourself, little man.”

I am no man.” He thumbed his chest. “I am a dwarf and among the tallest of my kind.”

The woman chuckled. “Yeah, right.”

He truly is a dwarf,” Tor said.

Dwarves are the subjects of bedtime stories.”

Just because you have not seen something yourself, does not mean it doesn’t exist, Taquell.”

I prefer you to call me Quell.”

Quell?” Tor frowned. “That means to quiet something. It’s not a name.”

And Tor is?”

It is short for Victor.”

And Quell is short for Taquell. What is the difference?”

Vanda sighed. “I asked for a civil conversation. If you two will not comply, I have ways of silencing you.”

Tor clamped his mouth closed. His nostrils flared, but he said nothing. Likewise, Quell crossed her arms over her chest, and she pressed her lips together.

Approaching footsteps drew Tor’s attention to the entrance as Ivanka and Goren walked in, each with a tray filled with food. The scent of spiced lamb tickled Tor’s nose and caused his mouth to water.

Excellent,” Vanda said as the pair set the trays on the table and began passing the food down. “Let us eat and then we will discuss business.”

Business?” Tor asked.

Of course. You didn’t think Quell joined us merely for our company?”

Tor chose two pieces of flatbread before passing the bowl to Vanda, all the while staring at Quell. What business could we have with this impertinent young woman?

He would soon find out.

I love fantasy, adventure, and magic. More than that, I adore my readers.

My books are written to entertain -- fantasy adventures filled with compelling characters, spectacular magic, thrilling action, constant intrigue, and a sense of discovery. I equate them to the "Marvel Movie" version of fiction, intended to be a fun escape.

I would love to have you join me and my quirky characters for one outrageous adventure after another. With over two million published words to my name, my author journey has just begun.
