Fortunately, there is a solution.

The Human Language delivers a compelling message. By replacing our habitual, learned patterns of communication we can experience greater understanding, empathy and connection in our relationships, transforming our lives.

Through easy-to-follow chapters, this book introduces The MECAnism, to calm your instinctive reactions, gain emotional clarity and develop psychological safety. Screen Proof Family Book Blitz #rabtbooktours

The digital parenting guide: from first phone to social media to AI safety, age by age

Parenting & Families

Date Published: May 26, 2026

Your 8-year-old wants a tablet. Your 11-year-old wants a phone. Your 14-year-old is on three apps you've never heard of - one of which is an AI chatbot that talks back.

* Do you know what age to hand over a smartphone and how to actually do it?

* Do you know which AI chatbots your kid is talking to, or what to say when one of them gets weird?

* Are you tired of being told to "limit screen time" without a plan for keeping kids off social media past Wednesday?

Screen-Proof Family is the missing manual for the smartphone and AI era of parenting.

Inside, you'll find:

* An age-by-age roadmap with milestones, red flags, what to roll out and what to delay at each stage.

* The 30-Day First Phone Rollout - a day-by-day plan for the single highest-stakes handover in your child's digital life with a Readiness Checklist for kids 9 to12.

* A Family Tech Contract template you can adapt in twenty minutes, plus the conversation script that gets your kid to actually sign it.

* The Family Safe Word - one low-tech rule that defends against AI voice-cloning scams and deepfake calls targeting kids.

* The Mirror Check - the research-backed parent habits your kids are already copying, and the systems that change them (because the strongest predictor of your child's phone overuse is yours).

* Conversation blueprints for the talks no one wants to have - smartphone addiction, social media and teenagers, cyberbullying, online predators, AI chatbot dependency and "everyone else has it" talk.

* A Parental Controls Field Guide - current router-level, device-level, and monitoring tools, organised by age stage.

* Neurodivergent considerations woven throughout - because ADHD, autism and screens interact differently than generic advice assumes.

What makes this different. A system, not a rulebook. Research-backed and platform-agnostic - built on habits, environmental design and conversations that survive the next app, the next AI model or the next app update. Every chapter ends with three things you can do this week, one habit to establish this month and one conversation to have this quarter. No alarmism or tech jargon. No screen-time math that doesn't really work.

Who this is for? Parents and guardians of kids 0 to 18. Also grandparents who may feel out of their depth. Pediatricians, teachers, and counsellors who want a single book to recommend. Anyone tired of being told what's wrong with screens but not what to actually do.

Phones aren't going away, neither is AI. Your job isn't to fight the future - it's to raise a kid who can stand inside it, with judgment and confidence.

About the Author

Max Hartman is an IT specialist. A few years ago he moved abroad with his wife, to a country where neither of them spoke the language, and they worked it out the slow way, on the ground. His wife now teaches English to adults: transferred professionals, trailing partners, people seeking asylum.

He wrote The Relocation Companion about the move he actually made — the one he and his wife did badly at first, then figured out what would have helped. Screen-Proof Family he comes at from the other side of his work: he knows how the phone in your pocket is built to pull at you, and what that does to the kids growing up around it.

He writes from what he’s lived or learned, not from theory, and brings in research only where it earns its place. He’ll tell you the truth about how hard a thing is, and give you something concrete to do about it. That’s the whole job.

It needs you — rooted, radiant, and real.

Introduction

For many years, I poured out my heart and soul in the name of motherhood. In the process, I lost myself. After having kids, I faced a series of challenges that seemed insurmountable. Those very challenges became the reasons for overcoming obstacles and confidently becoming my authentic self . . . the real me. My life used to revolve entirely around my children. They were the center of my universe. I was buried under the chaos that was unravelling right before my eyes. While I loved being a mother, somewhere along the way, I lost sight of who I was.

My days were consumed by endless tasks: work, school drop-offs and pickups, doctor visits, maintaining the household, and juggling countless after-school activities. But I knew motherhood was an investment. It was a bittersweet time though. While I loved raising my kids, I didn’t love that I was paying a hefty price through my selflessness. I thought that pursuing my dreams and goals meant giving up on my children, which felt like a betrayal of motherhood. Then it hit me: One day my children will grow up, and I’ll have to face myself again. Who will I be then? Since children grow up and become adults, I realized I needed to reclaim my individuality. Buried in all those years of dedication, I began to see things more clearly: I needed to muster up the courage to find myself, to become multidimensional, to take center stage.

We are all called to discover our higher purpose. Going through a myriad of emotions, it’s easy to play the blame game. Blame the world, blame our health, blame our past, blame current situations, and blame the decisions that have led to this moment. With all that said, I have to ask you: Mom, isn’t it time you took center stage?

This book is taken from the lessons I have learned through trial and error. It is a daring guide of self-acceptance, personal development, and remarkable success after having children. I’m here as a woman, like you, who has gone through some beautifully chaotic and humbling experiences after having kids. Some difficult growth experiences that have led to establishing my full identity and, at the same time, becoming a better parent. Not as an appendage to my children or spouse but as a confident, bold woman who knows and understands my worth because I have rediscovered myself.

Gals, it’s pretty easy to close this book and move on to the next thing that calls to us. And with the endless distractions out there, you could head to Facebook, Instagram or TikTok and go down that rabbit hole. Or you could go back to washing that mountain of laundry. This is my call to you: When will you do the things that will allow you to stand on your own feet? When will you be daringly bold? When is the right time for you? I’ll tell you: That time is now. It’s today. It is in this moment. This is your chance to finally become who you were meant to be.

Life is unpredictable, so what I’m asking of you isn’t a cutesy idea. It is a life skill that we as women and as mothers need to impart not only to ourselves, but also to our children. Be prepared before the necessity becomes desperation. Be an example to your kids. Show them that this valiant woman is also in charge of her life, her autonomy, her decisions. She isn’t afraid to dream, set goals, and go forth.

This guide is intended not only for the two of us. It is also meant for every woman who needs to hear that she is enough, that there is hope to learn, to grow, and to achieve everything her heart calls to irrespective of age, status, skin color, religion, or any difference that makes you one in a million. Anything that makes you stand out is your superpower! Let’s embark on this journey together. I can’t wait to see the woman you’ll rediscover—the bold, confident, and unstoppable YOU.

Crossing Fifty-One Book Blitz #rabtbooktours

Death & Grief, Parenting, Self-Help

Date Published: 06-20-2023

Publisher: Koehler Books

A week before Christmas 1951, Dr. Ralph Russell risked everything to voluntarily enter a locked federal drug-treatment facility known as a "narcotic farm."

Sixty-five years later, Dr. Russell's granddaughter Debbie suffers a debilitating crisis of identity when her father (Dr. Russell's oldest son), always her biggest fan, is accepted into hospice.

Debbie's investigation into her paternal lineage reveals family secrets and ignites her mother's volatile outbursts, propelling her into therapy.

When therapy fails her, the grandfather Debbie never knew saves her, and she collaborates with her dying father one last time to make her biggest dream come true.

Crossing Fifty-One pulls back the curtain on the internal struggles of midlife and provides a blueprint for redefining one's self beyond the constraints of addiction and dysfunctional family dynamics.

About the Author

Debbie Russell is a lawyer-turned writer. She spent twenty-five years as an Assistant County Attorney in Minneapolis, prosecuting numerous high-profile cases—specializing in those involving domestic and child abuse. At age fifty-five, Debbie took early retirement, giving up a full pension for the freedom of time. She now spends that precious time writing, restoring her property to native prairie and wetlands, and training her rambunctious retrievers.

Debbie’s first published article appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune in 2001. After that small triumph, her writing focused primarily on legal briefs and memoranda, which were consigned to district court files. Debbie resumed creative writing in 2014 when she began her storytelling blog by sharing personal stories and professional experiences that touched her life in a significant way. Her top-ranked December 2021 article for Elephant Journal, an online journal that celebrates the mindful life is entitled “Getting the Most out of Therapy: Easier Said than Done,” and is partially based on events in her book.

Debbie's award-winning book, Crossing Fifty-One: Not Quite a Memoir, was released in June of 2023. In 2024, she became a regular contributor to the Minnesota Star Tribune, writing about criminal justice and adjacent issues.

Excerpt

Chapter 1

Now: Christmas 2015

“Should I call 911?” The server smiles politely, her eyes locked on Dad.

“Let’s give it a minute,” I respond, attempting to project a pleasant, calm demeanor I don’t actually feel. The last thing Dad wants is to be responsible for lunch being called off.

Miraculously, Mum nervously agrees.

Nodding, the server glides away.

Slumped in his chair, eyes closed, Dad does not move. At least he’s not thrashing around on the floor. That would draw too much attention.

The muted sounds of conversation and clinking silverware blend seamlessly with Nat King Cole’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The upscale St. Paul restaurant, a lovely relic of the Victorian era, is decked out in holiday splendor, appealing to Mum’s heightened need for that certain aesthetic. My reservation has secured us a cozy table near the fireplace. We are tucked behind one of several glittering Christmas trees scattered throughout the restaurant. Table placement is key. Mum cherishes her privacy even when dining out.

However, despite all my efforts at concealment, a young woman makes her way over to our table. “I wasn’t meaning to eavesdrop,” she begins, “but I work in a nursing home, and this happens pretty regularly.”

Her gentle voice calms me but glancing at Mum and seeing the fake smile she dons like a mask, I feel my heart beat a bit faster. We have been exposed.

The young woman continues. “One little trick I’ve learned is to put a Kleenex or napkin in front of the person’s face to monitor their breathing.”

I could see Dad was breathing, but now I struggle to control the slight panic that has crept in and taken its place in my chair at our table.

I suppose there are worse ways to go.

Since Dad’s Parkinson’s diagnosis over a decade ago, I’ve had a front-row seat to his slow disappearance. Once the buffer and the glue for our little family, he now struggles to fulfill his most important role: keeping Mum happy. This morning, he insisted that he could manage the holiday lunch outing, but just getting from the car into the restaurant was touch and go.

I exhaled once we were seated at our semi-secluded table. We ordered our food, and Mum immediately began prattling on about how lovely everything looked. I nodded and smiled, playing my role as a dutiful, devoted daughter. When Mum finally paused her soliloquy, we both glanced over at Dad.

He was out cold.

That was about ten minutes ago. Or was it ten hours? I can’t tell.

Mum keeps talking. I guess it helps her take her mind off her unconscious husband. I keep smiling while monitoring Dad’s breathing out of the corner of my eye. The restaurant staff hovers in as nice a way as possible. Finally, we agree that 911 should be called.

After what seems like forever, three burly paramedics make their way back to our table. By this time, Dad is coming around.

“What did I miss?” He smiles weakly.

His smile fades as he glances over at Mum.

“I’m so very sorry.”
