Rating: Five out of Five Stars

From the first page of the first book, I was touched by how beautiful and thoughtful these stories are. They are completely appropriate for helping young children understand why a beloved older relative may behave strangely without ever talking down to the audience. The scenarios are realistic even though the authors depicted them using colorful, whimsical dragons. The authors even integrate issues such as Grandma wearing diapers in a compassionate and matter-of-fact way.

The authors have real-life experience caring for individuals with Alzheimer's, as their mother had the disease.

While the book was created with children in mind and some might say I have the mind of a child, I found it comforting even as an older adult. I worked with the elderly population for approximately 25 years, including many people with dementia. However, after losing several people to dementia (not all of them had Alzheimer's) within the space of ten years, the work became too personal for me.

These books helped me recognize some feelings that I still carry in my subconscious. There are feelings of helplessness, wondering why this rotten disease took someone I cared about, and the feeling that this kind of thing happens to other people and you feel sorry for them. It doesn't happen to your own family.

The Grandma is Acting Funny books were written with children in mind, and there's no reason not to pick up a copy for your inner child to enjoy and take comfort in too.
