Characters
Characters are the most essential part of a
book. I’ll read different genres, and tropes I don’t care for if I love the
characters. My what-if questions that lead to a story come from imagining what
a particular person would do in a particular setting.
Mariah has a different background,
something that I have wanted to include in one of my characters. She grew up on
a sailboat. This is a setting I am living right now.
At the end of August 2018, my husband and I
moved onto our sailboat and left Canada, heading south. Since then, we’ve made
our home on the water in the Caribbean. It’s exciting to see parents who, for a
single year or many, are taking their children and giving them this kind of
exposure to different people, languages, countries and lifestyles.
Since people without issues don’t keep a
story going, I imagined someone growing up as a kid travelling the world on a
boat and experiencing problems with that. This is entirely something I made up,
and none of the kids I’ve encountered have told me they feel this way – but
they might.
Mariah grew up with travel and change, and
now wants to stay still and predict what’s going to happen to her. As an adult,
she’s staying on land, and has plans to settle in NYC after this year in
Carter’s Crossing. But not everything can be planned.
My editor helped me create Nelson. When I
originally proposed this idea, the character of Nelson had suffered through an
engagement to a bridezilla. She asked about flipping the expected scenario and
having him be the groomzilla. That immediately made Nelson more interesting and
helped me understand him.
He’s a natural leader, town golden boy,
coasting into his dream life, only to realize that he’s been so focused on
himself and his career that he hurt his fiancée. Suddenly, he has to look at
his goals and actions in a new light. He returns to his hometown, determined to
never be that guy again. And since his wedding planner encouraged him,
he has a bit of a problem with wedding planners in general.
Finding that his beloved grandmother has invited one to change his town…does not go over well.
