Operation Nightfall: The Web of Spies Book Blitz #rabtbooktours

The Web of Spies

Espionage / Thriller

Date Published: 9/17/24

Former SOE operative Luba Haas and MI6 agent Natalie Jenkins secretly enter Poland in 1948 to meet with a sleeper agent and anti-communist insurgents, not realizing their mission has been compromised by a mole deep inside British intelligence. Inspired by the true events of Poland's anti-communist insurgency, the Cambridge Five spy scandal, and a covert British operation to roll back communism to the borders of the USSR, Operation Nightfall: The Web of Spies sheds light on a lesser known story of the Cold War and immerses readers into the shadowy world of spy-versus-spy operations.

Ornery Owl's Rating:

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Mini Review:

It's a good thing I don't let Rotten Tomatoes, or any other review site, tell me what I should and shouldn't watch. This military thriller was a critical failure, but I found it thoughtful and thought-provoking. Ed Harris is excellent in the role of Dmitri Zubov, a Soviet submarine captain sent on one final voyage before retirement. Zubov is a troubled alcoholic who suffers from seizures brought on by a head injury sustained during a mission where he lost several crew members.

The sub's mission is hijacked by a group of rogue KGB agents led by the menacing Bruni, skillfully portrayed by David Duchovny. These fanatics hope to trigger a nuclear exchange between the United States and China by altering the sub's acoustic signature to make it appear to be a Chinese vessel and firing a nuclear missile at the American naval fleet in Midway.

Zubov and those loyal to him are imprisoned and must escape and prevent Bruni and his colleagues from starting World War III.

Perhaps the script has its imperfections, but the cinematography and performances are top-notch. If you enjoy military thrillers, I think this movie is a wise choice.

Mini Review

A well-made film with a stellar cast. Like Uncommon Valor, which Patrick Swayze starred in a year earlier, it's a 1980s action film with a patriotic theme. Although some scenes are rather improbable and nobody but an action movie character could survive them, the movie raises some thought-provoking questions.

Amazingly enough, this is my first viewing of this movie, even though it was released the year after I graduated from high school.

Like a fine wine, Ornery Owl gets more acidic with time.
Or something like that.
