How to Write Authentic Dialogue in a Future Setting: Tips for Aspiring Sci-fi Writers
One of the biggest challenges I encountered when diving into the world of science fiction writing was the significant challenges in creating authentic dialogue in a future setting. After all, how will people converse in a world so different from our own, with futuristic technologies, alien species and languages we haven’t even dreamed of?
Although I don’t pretend to have all of the answers as we explore this topic, I’ll provide tips I’ve used in my own writing to make your characters' conversations resonate with readers.
Understand Your World
Before crafting your dialogues, you need to have a deep understanding of your sci-fi world. Although it is your world–one that you created, it’s important to consider its futuristic technologies, societal norms, and cultural intricacies. The way your characters interact should reflect the environment and time that they inhabit.
Keep it Relatable
No matter how far in the future your story is set, human emotions, for the most part, should remain consistent. Feelings of love, jealousy, ambition, or insecurities are timeless and probably not that much different from how they are today. While your character may be discussing future technologies, or traveling to distant planets, they should express emotions in ways readers can relate to.
Research Current Slang
Language is constantly evolving, many slang terms or phrases come from cultural events and technological advancement. By understanding current slangs one can extrapolate and craft futuristic ones. This gives an authentic dialogue texture making your future setting more believable.
Listen to Real Conversations
For dialogues to feel genuine, it must mirror real-life conversations, so spend some
For dialogue to feel genuine, it must mirror real-life conversations. Spend time listening to how people talk – the pauses, the unfinished sentences, the emotions conveyed through tone. Incorporate these elements to add depth and realism to your characters' interactions.
Consider the Impact of Technology
In a world dominated by futuristic technologies, consider how these advancements influence communication. Do people rely more on non-verbal cues because of telepathic advancements? Or has the art of conversation declined due to over-reliance on AI intermediaries? Answering such questions will guide your dialogue creation.
Get Feedback
Lastly, always seek feedback. Share your dialogues with fellow writers, especially those familiar with sci-fi world nuances. Their insights can help refine the conversations, making them more genuine and relatable.
Crafting authentic dialogue in a future setting can be challenging but deeply rewarding. It breathes life into your characters and makes your sci-fi world more immersive. Remember, the key lies in balancing the futuristic elements with the timeless essence of human communication.
